Default Viper GTS vs 928

I drove my friends 1998 Viper GTS today....so I figured I would pick up Gerry and really wring it out a bit........Hmm 3383lbs...450hp...490torque.....lets just say it is FAST!!!! Stupid fast...... In first gear it fights for traction with the 335 tires....second gear just slams you in the seat to about 80mph....I would guess it pulls better than .8G...but haven't tested it with the Gtech

The steering is very quick, with good feel....the pedals are offset (annoying)...clutch is quite heavy...shifter is clunky.... It acutally handles pretty good when you can keep it pointed in the right direction....not sideways like I was pretty good at today!!

The interior is cramped, covered in plastic & very noisey with squeeks and rattles...getting in and out is difficult and the exhaust runs right under the door & gets very hot (about 130)....the ride is very stiff.....visability is okay to the front (the hood is soo long) & horrible to the rear sides...it also was running quite warm in town on a 86' day....almost to the last white line before the red 250 mark!! It is also very low & the front end scrapes easily on the smallest driveway.

Of course I had to drive the 928 today too.....in comparison the 928 is a luxury cruiser....so much more roomy, refined and relaxed....it feels like it leans way over in the corners compared to the Viper....but it really doesn't. The Viper has far more power....especially on the bottom end.....I think the Viper has about 400ft/lbs at just over 1000rpm...it feels like it.....I do like the steering better in the Viper....but it is so quick...it would scary at high speeds! On the freeway I would pick the 928 everytime....sure the Viper is faster with a higher top speed....but it would get annoying very quick....

Now if I could get the power the Viper has in the better built package of the 928!! That would be the best of both worlds!!! Gonna have to start saving for a boosted 928!!! 400-450whp should do it!

We had the new SRT10 at work a couple months ago. That is a wild ride. I love the power and pull. It isn't very refined but that is what I love about it. Keiths car pulls hard (GTS) and reminded me of the viper.

Brendan, I think he's telling us that sneezing is unadvisable while at speed in the Viper.

That's easy. Spend $7K on a supercharger and have it all.

The Viper GTS is one of my favorites for sure; no car looks faster standing still than it.

Yep... That's the conclusion I came to. Can't wait for the money to leave my hands. 4 1/2 weeks and counting.

928+boost=the whole package.

Power, handling, and the refinement we all love.

I really did not like the offset pedals of the viper either. Maybe you could get used to it, but I doubt it. Quite frankly, for that kind of money they should have gotten that right. If you have a chance to drive a '91+ 928 you might prefer our steering over the viper. The steering weight is just right starting in 1991 IMHO. Bolt the blower on to your '88 and you will have the HP/Torque of the Viper.

That happened with a guy at my work except that he was alright. Car wasn't so good though. Very slow speeds too.

The steering has slightly lighter effort and a much quicker ratio without any on center slack-vagueness that was designed into the 928 for high speed cruising....taking corners it has a very nice feel to it....you can feel the tires very well....just have to be careful with the throttle...it is so easy to kick out the tail in a Viper....& it comes around quick...plus you sit right in front of the tires...so you really feel it....I don't know if its the torque or what...but when the rear starts to slide it slides RIGHT NOW & way too quick....the 87 5 speed with LSD did not do this...it was a much more gradual controled slide...not the snap oversteer the Viper did...& this is with 275's in front and 335's in rear

Quite honestly the car is scary....it so quick and can smoke the tires so easily (especially in corners)...it could easily get away from you!!

Now a twinscrewed 928 with an LSD....that would be lots of fun!!

Twin turbo the S4 and see MOPAR in your rear view mirror...unless it is a Hennessey. Nice part about the turbos...they come on right when you need them...mid range and top end. I wonder how my 4.5 TT would hold up against a Viper? I've got about 430 HP and 470 ft-lbs on that car, plus the shorter rear end gears...it is quick for sure.
