Race Results Laguna Seca SCCA ITE event #2 (porsche 928 leading manufacturer points)
Both Scot and I had an awesome weekend at Laguna seca, to make up for the wash out rain race of Infinion last month.
The Holbert car,in its near 50 races, is still running strong.. started out the weekend with a practice on my old hoosiers that should have been decent, but again, they proved to be 2 seconds slower than the garbage can Toyo RA1s . slapped them on for qualifying and ran a near best time of 1:40.4 gridded up on the front row with 17ITE entries, including the 550hp Evo, 5 M3s and a Rolex Grand Am GT corvette! (not to mention Scot whom ran a personal best of 1:45 in the recently rebuilt, euro /US 4.7 liter racer.)
the race was pretty interesting for the first few laps with the '02 BMW racer and his new $3000 suspension, but the 'ole holbert car was able to regain the 2nd place position and thats how the race ended up. however, the EvO, with 440rwhp, 4x4 and 305s on all 4 corners walked away, with average times in the 1:37s. (could haved used an anderson 6.5 liter cameo apperance! )
Anyway, Scot had an awesome race, ending up with a blistering 1:44.0. a time even faster than Dean Krenz posted on new hooseirs with his beautiful 5 liter racer!!! showing, that there is not much you need to do to make an old 928 real fast. Scots car is a stock 1982 chassis, trans, with a euro 4.7 engine, and a set of headers!! (and fuel reg, but US AFM!!) we cut springs to make it stiffer and he has a devek swaybar!! 1:44.0!!!!! there are guys out there with 10X the $$$ barely keeping up with him. His car is runninig great, has very good power, and we havent even begun to do a bit of tuning. there are guys in the pits , changing spring rates, adjusting bump, compression, swaybars, etc, scot and I show up, never adjusting a thing in 5 years, and run some stout times! I dont think you can do this with any other platform.
so, Scot finished 5th, while the Holbert car ended up in 2nd so, as of now, the porsche 928s are leading the manufacturer points for the series!!! (if there was one, ha ha)
The Holbert car ran strong, as always, but ended up with a push toward the end of the session. I finally found out that you can cord a RA1 if you leave it on long enough!
The rest of the season looks like this:
may 20th Thunderhill or POC tribute to Lemans Cal speedway
june 10th thunderhill
June 30th Infinion Raceway
August 5th thunderhill double regional
Sept 2nd Infinion Raceway
August 30th Laguna seca double regional (anderson and Fan should show up)
Oct 28th Laguna seca grand finale.
Here is a shot of our high tech pits. only enough stuff that will fit in our cars and we drive to the track every race, no trailers!

You inspire me. One of these days (soon) I'm going to get myself a track beast and go to town. Awesome job to you and Scott in representing the 928 crowd.

The Holbert car was a preproduction off line prototype 86 chassis fitted with S-4 bits and setting records long before the normal S-4 production...

Sweet job!!!! So the 550hp EVO runs 1:37.xx at laguna...Anderson runs better times than that right? I thought he ran 1:34:xx??? You can never have too much HP!! :>) I'd guess you could buy all the 928 racecars (you, scot, MarkA, JoeF..etc) for what it costs the EVO to run one season! Its gotta hurt to spend big $$$ and still get smoked by a 20 year old car....then again I guess thats why Caddy cried so much and got you kicked out of speedvision!!

Thanks everyone! yes, we have some fun out there. Like when Anderson and I were at the speedvision races, we felt so guitly we didnt have to take our cars apart after each session! (although anderson was even runninig in the top 10 on occasion!) At laguna Anderson runs 1:34.xx as a best, and usually pretty consistant in the 1:35s . for some reason now, he is running disproportionally faster at Infinion! (ie 1:39.9 on slicks).
The Evo did run 1:36.7 or something in the race, never getting into the goal of the 1:35s . However, its clearly a 1:33-4 car if driven to its limits. the driver is still cutting his teeth in his second season of racing. I dont think he would do that well in a close race, as he has never had any door to door racing. In my book, he is just time trialing in our race!
it was pretty funny. Now, i get a long great with the evo guys, but im always joking with them. so, when i showed up, i parked next to them with a couple of hours before our first practice and yelled over to them, " hey, im flattered you though you needed all this gear and all these people to beat my 20 year old salvaged, stock, 928!! The real cool think is that we beat one of the Grand Am GT corvettes that showed up from up from Seattle Wa. Lots of power, on the slicks they run in the series (non DOT) and I think i ran a faster time too.
The Evo won, the '02 M3 was ridding my tail for most of the race, making me drive my mirrors a lot, and my usual nemisis, Dave Smith in the white M3 euro 3.2, (pro prepared, etc) was unusually slow. He just said they put on some other hoosiers and it wasnt handling right. last year , i gave my RA1 advice to the 02 M3, now he is posting faster times. dont know if i can afford to give that advice to David smith!
anyway, the link for the incar video, from the '02 M3 is located here:

Thanks again for all the support. Got to love these cars!

The video was awesome. Love the comments...."**** that Fooking V-8!"....."What a Dick...Punt him, Punt him!" All in fun though. The Evo made a quick getaway....never saw him again after the first half lap. Good stuff as always Mark.
