I guess im just a cheap SOB. But to me sixty bucks for a little POS flywheel locking tool is a rip off. There must be a better cheaper way to do this. And don't give me a line about supply and demand and how theres such few 928 owners that the parts have to sit on a shelf for ever and a day, and someones got to pay the overhead. This thing probably costs about five bucks to make.
I can see sixty for the tensioning tool but not for this piddly little thing.

If it's a 5-speed, just put it in 5th gear, set the parking brake really good, and go for it. If it's an auto... say good-bye to $60 or call a friend who has one - your choice.

Just make sure your tool engages the starter ring gear and NOT the timing ring. Because the big square toothed timing ring is pressed on but not very tightly and sometimes moves. That creates all kinds of interesting issues.

FYI because fabricating your own tool it might seem easier to engage the nice big square teeth on the timing gear rather than the smaller more pointed little teeth of the starter ring gear. l

Jim,
Mine doesn't work, it somehow slips, I don't think it engages the teeth far enough.
