Default Some info on AFM to Mass Air conversion

There was a thread a while back with questions about doing this. I e-mailed Kevin at Injection Labs and asked him if he had any info on doing this. Here is his reply. Hope it is useful to someone.

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the delay. Yes you can convert from a flow meter to a mass meter. The units need to be matched.
I have heard that there is a expensive meter on the market. I don't have any other information about it.
Coincidently I have a Carrera in the shop that I am converting right now.
I am using the old flow meter to get the base line data. Then we will match a mass meter. I need to check if I have any core flow meters for your vehicle to get the data from. If not you could send me yours and we could do it that way.

Hmm, interesting... Someone should send in there AFM and have them match it up, or whatever they do so the L-jet guys have an upgrade solution.
From what the 951 crowd is doing, the wiring is different between the two metering devices, and you have to modify your chip's code for the MAF.
Anyone know more about this?

I'd be interested in sending my 951's AFM to him if he can give me a plug'n'play type of solution, or close to for a conversion.

Good stuff, Kev

The usual method is to insert a "translation box" between the new meter and the FI ECU. Then you don't need to remap to ECU.

But you do need to know what the laws are your are trying to match.

I could gather some starting values on my flow jig.

The 968 hot wire MAf maight be a possible candidate for this conversion. What internal dia is the existing AFM ?

John Kuhn has converted two 928s (Goldmember and his Calloway). You could ask him for help.

This was done to my 951 by the P.O.
I believe that Huntley makes a kit for the 951.

Remember that the 928 has an odd voltage for the AFM, 0-8(?)V, versus 0-5V.

John used Split Second programmable converters (here). I doubt he would share the maps, and they are not for NA cars anyway.

It would be cool to have a plug-in MAF or MAP solution that could emulate the stock AFM vane and air temp signals. It would be even nicer if you could reprogram it later!

But, IIRC, it has been said that a NA MAF conversion only nets 10HP, and costs over $500.

I though that the perfectpower piggyback computer had a built-in feature for signal transcoding. I think you can convert flow to mass, or mass to map... etc. It maps the signal of the sensor to rpm, then scales it according to the range of the new sensor you install. Plugin both sensor and drive the car around for a couple days and it teaches the piggyback the conversion table. Could be wrong, but here is a link:

I remember the SMT6 being discussed for this before. Check with Louie Ott, he sells Perfect Power boxes.

when someone has some success here, we need to convert scot's racer to MAF . we have all the mechanical adapters to make it work, just need a MAF and someway to make the voltages equal to what the ecu wants. 4-8.5 volts is what the AFM puts out. the maf i tried using split second wasnt even close and failed . lots of work and cost for nothing!!!!
