ErnestSw...
Sorry! I didn't know tender eyes & ears were still up at this hour.
Well, per Doug H., it looks like you've dodged the bullet.
G'luck, & more miles with smiles.

Hi Doug,
I am in your debt for the reassurance. Those of us who are novices at this process really don't have the necessary perspective to evaluate our results.

I just changed my oil after it sat for winter, does the oil really need to be warmed up before taking the sample. they say you should run the engine for a few minutes before taking the sample. What if I take some of the oil and heat it in the oven, when the wife isn't home, and then take a sample. Would that work? Otherwise I'm waiting till next fall for an oil change.

ErnestSw... here in the Pac. N'west occasionaly we get sunshine,
not like down your way; ours is weak-wristed stuff. However,
it's OIL CHANGE weather; lie on the dry ground & get slippery.
I just put in a new filter and Castrol Syntek 5W-40. The old oil
was dark & slippery, smelled ok and NO chips on the drain plug.
I've requested a kit from Blackstone; so in a couple weeks I, too,
will have some numbers of interest. Maybe Blackstone can begin
a 928 database for us, with ranges.
G'luck, all.

the little magnetic particles on the oil drain plug, where doest that metal come from? we saw some of this on scots car, more than i usually see, but its a new engine. rings??
filter was dusted with some, almost , cloth looking fragments and some little flakes. could be just because its a new engine and his cylinders were slightly honed. I guess the next oil change will tell all!
amzoil in his car now, and he lasted his first race with the new engine!! Ye haw!

Update - my shark is healthy. Got the Blackstone report (on-line)
yesterday. No surprises. Compression, btw, is 152 +/- 3 psi
(dry) on all jugs.
ErnestSw.. thnx for the lab info & contact.

Hi macreel,
please post your results for us all to share. Most important are the wear metal components and oil condition aspects as noted above
Mark - it is common to have minor metallic deposits on a magnetic drain plug and occasionally a "show" in a full flow filter (more usual in a by-pass type). This debris has many origins but is usually from wearing components and non wearing sources (machining etc) and of course you see the accumulative deposit.
This deposit can be analysed for content. Engine specific metallurgy also plays a role of course
Typically, and for engines in normal use, the wear metals in the deposit are very small (<5microns). A full flow oil filter of course usually captures >15micron debris
Mass loss from bearings is typically less than 50% of that from rings and of course most wear is from the top rings. In order, the mass concentration is usually iron, copper, lead and chromium
The "cloth like" and "flakes" from your (Scot's) filter are most likely from the assembly/machining processes
Mark if I was racing a 928 as you do, I would do an oil analysis after each race day. Over time and from a simple "Excell" type database, this will tell you a lot about the engine's condition and it will be meaningful in determining the suitability of the lubricant used
Regards
Doug Hillary
