My automatic 87 S4 gets on average 13 MPG. Is that what I should expect?
Other than no cats, the car is stock. What kind of MPG are others getting
out there? When gas was 1.50 a gallon it never phased me, but now
at almost 3 bucks a gallon it kinda gets my goat.

My '88 averages 19MPG on back roads, higher on the highway... Not bad!
Something doesn't sound right if yours is around 13MPG, unless you can't keep the right foot off the floor

It all depends on driving style. I have always averaged much less than others in the current car and my old '82. I love to accelerate, so I drive it like I'm at the dragstrip: floor it in 1st, floor it in 2nd, then maybe ease up in third. This does wonders for gas mileage! Last average read 14.2, but then most of my driving is city driving.

Agreed 13 mpg is too low, unless you have it floored all the time. Toolng down the highway I think you can get low-mid 20's per gallon.
I am paying about 3.80 a gallon in Canada, and that is probably the cheapest up here, don't feel too bad about 3$/Gallon. The price is only going to go up, but hey it's only money!!

Sorry I should add, that when I am just cruzin aroud town on the highway, my instant MPG reads in the 18 to 20 range (advantage of having a digital dash!). Even that may seem low, but everyone in Detroit drives 80+.

On my 89GT..the digital readout gives me around 12.8l/100km....or in US...18.4mpg....
My old S4 gave around 18 to 22...(22mpg at 85mph on the way down to Devek Days a few years back)..
Currently the GT is showing around 7L/100km or in US..34mpg..but that's because the computer is being fooled by the large injectors (30lbers). It calculates the fuel economy off of the inj duration...

However, suffice it to say, I could get much less and I'd still keep driving!

From San Diego to Monterey on I5-101-Cabrillo, heavy traffic to high speed bursts I averaged 19 mpg last month. At 75 on a level highway with neither headwind nor tailwind I get about 21 mpg. In daily driving, mostly city, I average 15.8 mpg.

I get 11-13 city in my '81 auto, never over 20.5 highway. I try and ease away from stop lights, but I do tend to drive 'quickly'. With the stock exhaust system, and tuned for emission tests, I'll get 14ish city.

Are you running stock tire sizes? I calculated that my 275/40/17s were around five % larger in circumference. Therefore, my speedometer/odometer is off. When I use this correction factor in my mileage, I find I get around 15 mpg in mixed driving. I can get 20ish on the highway, but idling around down is baaaaad.
