"Tip in" tuning, as Ernest says

Ok Bill ! Loaded also asked about WOT tuning in "the twin screw thread", so I pointed him to Cameron's final report...
I think the problem with his car could be MAF...
We are making some good progress on the EZK version of the Sharktuner - finding out just how clever it is.......

I was having poor part throttle response on my 89. Car ran fine otherwise. Replaced the MAF and things improved. I also picked up 10 HP on the dyno.
BTW , how are the vaccume lines ? MAF could be getting a false reading. Good filters ? No nests in the intake ?

Loaded has quoted me from the SharkTuner thread, me thinks to help describe his issue. I don't image he actually has tip in.
Loaded - Did you have this issue with the stock chip?

The car drove like a dream to me - however I am looking for a very smooth fast pickup in speed, smooth transmission changes and performance on par with what I,m used to.
I checked the car out with the Spanner and got a clean bill of health.
Flappy works fine. Did not appear to have any vac leaks though we plan to test the HVAC and all vac next GTG.
I am not a racer and do not look for every nuance of power but the car was to me a typical S4.
MPG is normal and in line with S4's.
Loaded added chips IIRC and to me it had no difference in power over a standard S4.
Maybe its the chips - vinegar with those Sir.

YOu guys have in narrowed down now,,,,,,It does appear to be in just 1st gear WOT. As i said before if you pull out of the throttle a little bit it accelerates harder, As it get in to 2nd, 3rd, 4th it accelerates Extremely well. its only in 1st gear dead stop WOT

I don't know what new flavour chips you've installed, but a quick return to original may be in order - at least to confirm what's going on.
As the car runs fine otherwise, there is no issue with ignition; therefore, if it 'bogs', it is a lack of fuel ..... if not the chip set causing this, it is the WOT enrichment missing as Khalloudy said.
Are you sure that the trans is downshifting into 1st gear? - unless 'tricked' into doing so, you are getting a standard, comfy 2nd gear start ..... hardly earth shattering .... almost like a flat spot until it gathers some revs.

Garth - definitly first gear when I drove it.
It has the kickdown switch added as well so I am pretty sure he is starting in First.

AHA! Now I understand. I was beyond baffled but that is so common it didn't set off any alarms.

Looking for smoother transmission changes? Check the vacuum line to the tranny. It gets throttle body vacuum. Pull it off the connector near the firewall and check that it holds vacuum back to the tranny. If not, raise car and look back at the modulator to see if it is connected there.
If he's getting lousy gas mileage, then this is not lean tip-in. Never was in the first place.
Poor performance could be so many things. Poor performacne only in first gear. Can't think of anything specific. The Spanner shows no faults.
He made the comment that if he pulls on the throttle, response is better. Not sure I understand that, but have both halves of the throttle cable been checked for excess slack? WOT will still be tripped (that is at 2/3rds throttle) but you are not getting full throttle opening if there is slack. You know the routine - snug the cables so you still hear the idle switch reliably click but there is as little slack as possible.

Ok I am going to try again and describe.
1st gear
WOT from standing still
very dead until 4800-5000 rpm
It wakes up if i let off the throttle and go part throttle 3/4 throttle etc.
ONLY In first gear
2nd gear works like a champ 3rd 4th etc works great and very blistering and addictive
We are talking first gear only and WOT
The vehicle is getting 22-23 mpg and I am getting city averages of 17-18mpg excellent gas economy
The stock chips did the same thing but with the other chips it is certainly more pronounced. I wont go back tot he stock chips because with the new chips the 4-6k rush is crazy compared to stock. With the new chips the top end pull is amazing with the old chips it lacked top end pull at all. The other cars i drove had better top end then this did with stock chips

This is why I thought maybe something vacuum related...

Could be, When i was in High School i used to work at a Volvo shop and when the gt would come in with this problem we would take a t handled allen and adjust spring pressure on the FI and depending on lean or rich condition it was tuned by SOTP.
I maybe assumed vacuum but you guys have been doing this longer then i have and i will assum nothing for now until you great ones speak first.
