Default What are the 'Euro' differences?

With my '88 S4 being a Euro version, I'm curious what the differences are between that and the NA cars. I've never actually seen another S4, besides internet pictures, so the only difference I know of is the little bumpers on the back.

Euro's have the side markers behind the front wheels and are part of the flasher system; the NA cars have then in front of the f.wheels and are only marker lights. some euros do not have rear marker lights and some have a fog in the left rear of the car; to the left of the licence plate. Ability to change height of headlights depending on weight and the UK cars have the steering wheel on the right and the pedals and pod etc etc etc.
Have a look at the 928 registry for all sorts of pictures.

When it comes to the S4 and newer, I *think* that the only differences are that you have one side marker per side behind the front wheel while the US cars have two side markers per side in front of the front wheel and behind the rear wheel. The engines are the same for US & ROW as m28/42, but the ROW cars are a hair faster and lighter per 928 specialists site. Maybe the exhaust is different or something, I'm not sure. After 86 I believe the US and ROW cars were made the same.

The euro S4 a/t had 2.54 rear end from '87 on and the 5 speed was 2.63 while the US cars had 2.20 '87-88 and in '89 had 2.54 a/t and 2.63 5 speed until mid year when the GT had 2.75 rear end. The euro headlights are better and the driving lights are better too, more of a pencil beam and not so diffused.
The 2.54 a/t final drive ratio is great, the car feels more powerful all the time in 4th gear. The 2.20 stuff was to increase fuel mileage for US regulations. I think the 2.63 is probably the best gearing for the 5 speed, the 2.20 is a little dead in 5th and the GT's 2.75 revs a lot on the highway in 5th. Just my opinion. My S4 is just a street car, and everybody has their own way they use their 928.

Mostly electrical on the later cars - Headlights are different (H4's on ROW/Euro with remote aim adjusters), Front rear and side marker lights are different, (no side markers on ROW), turn signals are different (side turn signal for ROW behind front wheel, no combo with front marker on ROW), Rear fog lights are combined with marker only on ROW, Rear stop lights are not combined with markers on ROW, no standard center high stop light on ROW, front fog stays on with high beam on ROW, Window controls operation is different, rear fog light is bottom left pod switch on ROW (Digi dash Reset is relocated under pod). Digi Dashboard may default to KMH and other metric, warnings may be in an alternate language by default.

There are more but these are the main ones. Many of these are undone when cars are federalized - so what you end up with on an ROW/Euro in the USA is a bit of a crapshoot....

Slight correction to Carl. GTs are 2.73. The individual gear ratios and layshafts are the same in all 2.63 and [edit: 1983+] 2.73 trannies (except GTSs).

so that means the 2.63 is slightly closer to the 2.2, except for 5th in the US version. overall, there is not as much difference of a 2.73 vs a 2.2 than most folks think. we have gone over this many times, but the 2.2 ratios vs the 2.73 is not the full 2.73/2.72 percentage. and if you dont change the individual gears, that total difference is even less. 5th gear is the main deal, that is the full diff ratio vs the 2.2. but, who needs gears after 157mph. (2.2 's 4th gear)

as an interesting note, the effective 2.2 ratios are amost exactly the same as the brand new corvette and the brand new viper. all have speeds in each gear of:
55mph first
80 2nd
118 3rd
155 4th. (actually the vets and viper are near 145 so 4th is lower)
then, both have these 5th and 6th gears that take it up to 300mph+ at redline.

In addition, the Euro cars lack the rear 'bumperetts' of the US/Can spec cars, have a clear lens insert in the fog/driving light assembly ( whoppee .. ), possibly a differing response to which lights activate on the high beam flash & high position - but I'm not certain of that. ....

4th gear on the 2.20 5 speed is 146 mph.
