Default door lock tumbler, screw stripped

I have a recently aquired 91 928 S4. The passenger side door lock began to protrude a little and I took it in to have it re-set and tightened down. The local dealer (as well as a locksmith since) indicated the hole in the tumbler is stripped and the set screw simbly won't grab.

I've had 3 suggestions;

1) Buy a new tumbler (not at the top of my choices)

2) Buy a similar screw one size up and carefully re-screw in (problem here is next size up that I can find is WAY larger than original and I'm not sure it would work.

3) It has also been suggested that there is a product called "re-thread", or "new-thread," or something like that which my Mercedes mechanic tells me works very well (if there are no other good options).

I have no idea how this problem developed and its a first for me. I'd appreciate any thoughts, options, suggestions, of the 928ers out there.

Thanks-

John

The set screw for the tumbler is right above the latch on jam of the door. Sorry i don't have a picture. You should be able to remove it yourself, and find an appropriate tap and re-thread for the next larger screw size (SAE or Metric). Please don't force a larger screw in there as it might break off in situ and then you'll really have a bugger of a fix.

It's a common problem with the driver's door lock setscrew working loose.

Thread repair may or may not work. So, its much easier to just buy another used lock and exchange the internals, however you must remove the inner door panel. Also, the lock casings are left and right due to a drain hole location, but also the alarm switches are left and right.
