Unsnap something.
Unplug a bunch of stuff.
Pull box out.
Carefully pry the little tabs.
Touch something metal to discharge static electricity.
Carefully pry up the IC a little at a time.
Direction of the chip matters - get the little notch right.
There might be a screwdriver or two in the process somewhere.
Reverse the steps, sorta.
Put the old chips in a safe container and keep them in the glove box just in case.
Fini. Sorry, I thought this was the Ferrari forum....

Most people are in too much of a hurry to disconnect the battery before beginning (one of the uplug items)
Most people don't have problems.
But, do you feel lucky?

I don't think that a chip will get you much in an S4. You could get some real power gains (maybe 30 hp) if you look at some of the exhaust options available off the shelf. If you want some big power gains (bolt on 100+ hp) put a blower on it.
I had my LH out recently to replace the stock chip with a connector to interface to the SharkTuner. This is not comprehensive by any means for chip replacement, but there are a few useful pics here. I could send you some more if you PM me your email.
And don't forget to disconnect the battery before you start.

Excellence magazine did a write up (with illustrations) on how to install performance chips in a 928 and 944. I remember reading it lately because I bought a few back issues. Have to look it up and see what issue it was. It was very well done, took all the guess work out of the task.

Sometimes it is faster to search the archives than wait for us to find our rumpled and smudged instructions. With what has been posted I would add, take your time, label things, IIRC the LH unit has a vacuum port/hose, best way to distinguish the two units. Careful with the tabs, they are good for 2 opening/closings then they start to break off. Get an IC circuit extractor from Radio Shack, makes installation much easier, if you don't line them up perfectly the pins don't go in squarely, you may bend one side, even break the chip, then you are screwed.

Thanks fellas all PM's sent.. Its nto that im trying to buy HP the chips came with the car along with the ebay bid stuff It cost the PO 375 for these chips about 3 years ago best I can tell. SIncet ey came with the car i figure it wont hurt to install them it no cost to me jus tto see a small improvement in midrange.
i searched the archives and found where several 87-89 owners did dyno before and after and they did get some peak HP but the majority of the gain was midrange where acceleration is made and that means alot because regardless of peak HP Mid range will help you accel while Peak HP will allow you to hold HIGH MPH. SInce most all our cars will smack the top end with our a hitch i jsut want to get to the the top end quicker.. that means more torque and midrange HP
Doesnt it?

Can you ID which eprom is for the LH vs EZK?
Disconnect the battery, there are 2 computer controllers, 1 for the fuel injection system LH and the other controls the ignition, EZK. Both are located on a metal frame thats bolted to the car on the RHS of the passenger footwell. Remove the large wiring harnesses to both and remove the 2 bolts holding the frame to the car and pull the assembly out (you may have to remove the passenger shelf to assist with access). With the assembly on the bench its then a matter of removing each 'brain' from the frame and bending back the tabs to remove the covers. Before touching the inside of the computers ground yourself some how to remove static electricity.
The eproms are marked with a notch and paint dot to ensure correct orientation. Carefully remove the current chip and install the new watching the legs; dont bend them.
Install is the reverse.
