Check with Andrew Olson. He's the keeper of "The 928 Shrine".

Have you checked the mounts for separation or degradation of the solid rubber block? Similarly, have you unbolted the lower end of the mini shocks and tested them for resistance?
The MM on the 16v cars pre '83 are very robust and not prone to collapse like the later hydraulic mounts. If the mounts look good and do not separate by jacking the engine ~1/2" ( carefully), they are fine; however, the shocks will fail and must take a fair effort to compress or extend .... easily replacable in a few min if dead.

These are the little guys - the body is ~5" long, and there is one either side bolted between the block and the rear bracket of the lower control arm ( almost on the steering rack bellows).

Come on guys, this is animal's car. He is due in the states on leave from Iraq this weekend. I and several other shark owners may make it to the operating table this weekend, and we can use all the BTDT help possible. My shark is an 89GT so I have no experience with the 81 MM setup.

I suggested to Tom that he check the MMs for seperation as Garth suggests above. I don't know if that has been done as of yet, but diagnosis of what is making this car vibrate are welcome. If I can get down there on Sunday, and the problem is not motor mounts, I will be looking at everything else that could cause the symptoms mentioned in Tim's thread.

Pitch in where you can guys, to help out a guy on the front line, doing a job none of the rest of us would change places with him for......

First suggestion, is to try and jack the engine up via the oil pan. Be sure to use something to help distribute the weight evenly - I use 2 layers of 3/4" ply plus a section of 2x4. Gently jack up the engine and check to see if the MM are connected or not before you start pulling stuff off. It should be pretty obvious from side to side if one or both have failed.

If you do get to the point where you have everything pulled and are putting things back together, when you go to re-install the cross member, the attachment points on the sides (fenders) can be a real b!+ch to line up! Use a pry bar of sorts and you can lever it into position. HTH! Good luck.
