I don't remember the 85S being that difficult to check. I must be getting old and perhaps my memory is slipping. I'll be doing this check again in a few weeks and report back if it's different for me than described above (no...I don't pull the engine). I've become **** since owning the 928 and probably check the belt too often.

My car is converted to R134a (that's what you meant Dave?); perhaps thats the shroud issue. Don't know never tried to get it out after the first attempt and I check my tbelt every spring.

BTW my air pump and hoses are long gone so dont have that congestion to deal with.

The bottom line is its not what has to be removed to get at the tbelt as long as you get to it and check it on a regular basis YMMV

Yeah - that's it. I'm lysdexic from time-to-time.

Ah. Foul! No fair. My method does not apply to non-stock configurations

Roll, Pitch, Yaw, and Time. Beer is not one of those dimensions btw. (That's 5D and a lot harder.)

Dave, do these allow you to undo the fittings with the shroud in place?

All great suggestions above. Regarding the fittings and what wrench to use, I picked up a set of these and they fit great:

They were a few bucks cheaper when I bought them, but they are very high quality and have been very helpful whenever I've had to touch my oil lines. Link to product page here.

Hmmm... well, I guess I'm not entirely sure if it would help on a later car. But I can drop my belly pan & alternator and get firm hold & counter-hold action on all of my oil fittings with these. I thought it would work, but I keep forgetting how much S4+ shrouds get in the way.

If what you need is a thin wrench, maybe something like this would do it:

You can get them at Park Tools or your bicycle dealer. Here's a link.
