I have the itch to build a 928 that is done the way I want it, custom interior and exterior, wheels ect. My dilema is that if I do it, do I use my car that is really a pretty nice stock example of an S4 (no rare options) or do I find a mechanically sound car that needs paint and interior and start with the unknown?
I know my car inside and out and what its strengths and weakness are. I would be taking a risk with a new car on mechanicals. I really hate to mess up a stock 928 in as good of shape as mine but then again can't really afford the risk of the unknown mechanicals of the new car. Whats your opinion?

That is kind of how I feel. I really want to do this but I am also afraid of never getting another as nice as mine. It does have a paint issue on the passenger side that needs attention, that is what got me thinking about just modifying it.

Unless you are worried about collector value, just modify your 928 as you want. I don't know if stock S4s will ever really be worth that much (in our lifetime). So, just make it what you want and enjoy it! Check out what Champagne did. He might never get the full value of his investment back but it is a beautifully modified interior, has increased the value of his car and is something that inspires us all.

Get a second Car. BTDT. Get a car you can trust and drive daily and do another car up.

I would agree with Brendan get a second car to modify and you have something very nice to drive while you get the work done on the new car. That also helps keep You from rushing the modifications and if when completed you find that you no longer drive your stock 1990 you can sell it then.

I'll join the "buy another one" band wagon. A true shark enthusiast should own at least two!

I really hate driving my truck and am considering getting rid of it. I am not sure about driving my current 928 as a daily driver. It has been a garage queen since new. I also drive a lot for work and I don't want to run up the mileage. NO room for three cars. I definately would need a mechanically sound car since that is not an area I dare to dive into. Body and interior I am confortable playing with.

Just curious, why do you hate driving your Tacoma? I have a 2002 double-cab 4x4, 125000 miles, no problems with it. My only gripe is the seat....the new models are much more comfy.
BTW, I vote for buying another 928 to work on. Otherwise, your current one will end up like Brendan's 89......

See the thing is that when you say "body and interior" - thats kinda where the mechanical is going to get involved. You need to remove suspension pieces ot do paint sometimes.
You also need to remove the engine to do the paintwork on the engine bay...
Its a long, dark, deep black hole or WYIAT.

The 89 became something that was going to be so perfect....that it couldn't be started yet.
I wouldn't do anything differently with the 78. I just would have made the 89 the daily driver.
The funny thing is I will by another S4 - but it may just be a shell.

Rebuilding these car and being really involved with them, I now need to see what else is out there. I need to get involved with other designs to see if its really as good as I think it is in basic design.
The front of my wife's 2005 Honda accord has 5 front suspension links. It was obvously designed by a finite analysis of what the best way to do it for this specific car and cost.
Porsche didn't use any computers. Could they have placed the suspenion roll point in a different place? Could the have controlled the hub carriers differently? We will never know.
