Wasn't there was a Bosch version of the same year alternator? Last time I had my paris-rhone alternator rebuilt (for the 3rd time in 3 years), what I got back from my mechanic had a little sticker that said "rebuilt bosch". And so far so good.
It is definitely not an alternator from a 32 valve though.

That's probably got something to do with it. The early alternator design really does a crappy job of drawing cooling air past the regulator & diodes without the shroud. You might be surprised how cheap that is to replace. (Oh, get the gasket too.) I had the Audi style alt in my car when I got it, and it had been on a slow decline... possibly heat related. I haven't had the original replacement long at all, but I've had it long enough to tell by looking at it that what everyone says must be true, this thing can't survive long without the shroud & duct.

I have a 75,000 kms Paris Rhone alternator off my car, it has a brand new regulator and was working on my car when I took it off the road to build my new motor. I currently have friends here in OZ that are from the U.K I could ask them to post it in the U.K for you. PM me if you are interested, I also have the cooling duct and it is also perfect.

You mean up into the front fender? That's where it belongs. Even if it's not mounted quite right, as long as it's not blocked that is far better than no duct. It should mount to a bracket that attaches to the forward fender liner panel. See Tony's alternator page: http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/alternat.htm
