A better solution would be a circlip that requires circlip pliers to remove.

I don’t see how circlips are any better? They both work on the same principle. Circlips have more contact area, but still the same crappy design. Even if they are missing, it takes a while before the arm comes off. So checking every time the hood is open will eliminate this problem. Now a castle nut with a cotter pin would be the perfect setup.
I also look at them every time the hood is opened

I would like to thank RngTrtl for posting this thread, it was something i had not been aware of and eventually my radiator would have met the same fate as both of my clips are missing! I checked it as soon as i got home from work and measured the diameter of the channel that the clip snaps into. the replacement clip should be 7.40 MM or .291 inches. if you are looking for a replacement. We have lots of these at work so i will go that route.
What is supposed to be on there anyway? Is it a snapring over a washer or one of those U-Shaped dealies that looks like an insert for a sheet metal screw?

Hey Beer Fish , I think we saved you some dollars that day..
as for the c clips fit make sure the size is correct. Saftey wire or maybe a locking pin would be good insurance. I may go that route as an update once other things are addressed. As long as the size is correct though with washers/plastic spacers in use on the arm it should stay on. Be sure to add some to your spare parts kit if you have one in your car.Dave

If you don't checklist this on a quarterly, bi-annual, annual basis, or, are a natural fretter...
find some small 'R' clips and drill a hole in that puppy.
This comes up fairly often, as does the March of the Crankshaft -unintentional main journal machining- both are thoroughly covered in the archives, so I am suprised so many sHARk owners haven't heard of it before.
Good post. Particularly if it saves a fair chunk of change and a lot of aggravation.
