Default hood release lever failure?

Getting the car ready for this 70 degree weather we are having this weekend. Went to open the hood and the release handle came apart????? I can still open the hood but somehow the plastic piece the handle sits in came off. It doesn't appear to be broken. I also see that this has occured 7 times previously, dating back to the first repair made on the car. Obviously there is a problem with this parts design.

It is a pain to get to. It appears the dealership replaced the part each time it came apart. Any ideas whether the part breaks when this occurs or is it a simple rebuild? Anyone know a trick how to get the pieces to go back together? Is there a way to prevent it from reoccuring?

Thanks Brian,

The piece you broke just popped off on mine. It didn't appear to be broken but I think it may be. I guess it is time to order up a new one or 2. Might as well keep one in reserve. Between this and batteries the car is on 8 of each.

On the later cars (not sure about early), the handle is pressed onto a plastic pivot post on the base plate and is held in-place by a clip-on cover. Not terribly secure. If the cover pops off, the handle will come off the post, but it is easy to reassemble. Mine actually has never broken or popped off.

It's a sign your hood cable is binding. That plastic stuff can handle only a little tension, then it's done. I bought a brand new backing, and broke it the first time I used it. Someone needs to make them from aluminium or such and sell them. The backing part that reaks often is EXPENSIVE

the three plastic parts are 928 511 143 02 the small clip on part @$5 , 928 511 173 02 the backing plate screwed to the kickpanel @$ 6.50 , and the actual handle which rarely breaks 928 511 175 02 @$6 So all three parts new totals about $17.50 plus shipping.

I found that after I fixed mine, I cleaned the cable really good everywhere I could find it and added some dry lube I used for my bicycle cables, the hood opens much easier now!

The release cable often gets damaged due to mispositioning near the headlight raising linkage. Also, the bottom latch catches a lot of road debris and should be periodically cleaned and relubed or it may stick and cause the lever to break.

Always selling Jim.

I will call you this week about ordering up the parts. I have another part i need to talk to you about also.

Funny thing is the cable does not feel like it is binding. The hood opens easily. It just seems odd that this has happened 8 times on this car, per the records.

To me the records are worth at least 15% of the cars value. I have every record for both my cars from day 1. Although I am missing the window sticker for the 928. Can't have it all.

You can make a window sticker.....Andrew Olsen made a program that lets you customize a porsche window sticker....all you need to do is find out the options-prices & work from there....I made one....it turned out sweet!
