Ah no one here (except Tom with his 65 El Camino 383) really is very interested in drag racing. I guess when you do drive an a road racing track and in one weekend get 2 1/2 ,3 hours of track time racing as fast as the car will go from corner to corner what happens in 14 seconds or less on a 1/4 mile just does not seem very significant. I get more track time in one weekend than the entire Force Family does in a year. SURE THEY ARE A LOT FASTER ..so what ! And the more you modify a car for drag racing the less it becomes able to do anything else well but drag race. But there is something for everyone tractor pulls, lawnmowers , airplanes , horses if it moves someone will race it !
I dont know if you've ever rode in a 1000hp car set up for drag racing(ie maximum standing start accel), but it is as terrifying as it is awe inspiring. I highly reccomend it!
There's nothing quite like BRUTE FORCE ACCELERATION.

On a related topic. Chevy/Ford Power vs Porsche power. Why does it seem so much easier and cheaper to build an American engine to great performance heights than it is to build an equally powerfull Porsche engine? If our beloved Porsche marquee is so well engineered why is it such a difficult climb to the higher peak HP numbers? Could it be that the high cost of the p-car parts keep the common man from tinkering? Even the weights of the engines aren't comparable. We have aluminum blocks and heads on our engines and no steel liners. But our engines still weigh a couple hundred lbs more than a steel blocked Chevy 350. WTF? I'm sure I'm missing something. Maybe someone here can show me the light.

I would prefer the Porsche 917-30 raced in 1973 a 5.4 liter flat 12 turbo charged about 1,100 hp 820 ft lbs torque 240 mph top speed 0-100mph in a bit over 4 seconds and it went around corners ! All that in 1973 ...

I wonder how much HP a 928 motor could make if it was made for drag racing? Pushed to 6.5 or 7.0L (steel closed deck) with a huge blower or big TT's at high boost...race gas the whole deal...1500+hp Who knows? Of course it wouldn't last very long either

I believe he hand made the front cover and the solid rear axle assembly (as well as engine and trans)was previously in something like a Vega compact as I recall.

A typical small-block chevrolet V8 with an iron block and aluminum heads/intake weighs around 560 pounds dressed. This is about the same as a 928's M28 V8 engine....NOT hundreds of pounds more as some have surmised. Why doesn't our engine weigh less? 1. They are the same size. Hello? 2. Your M28 isn't cast iron, but it is an aluminum alloy that is lighter...but not as light as the metal on your window frames or hood. 3. Aluminum is not as strong as cast iron, so the M28 engine is overbuilt. 4. Overhead cams rev better and are smoother, but they take up more space and weigh a bit more than pushrod heads.
-You can build a 9 second street 928 with a chevrolet engine FAR cheaper than you can with the far more advanced M28 engine because there are litterally millions of relatively cheap aftermarket parts for the far more common chevy.
