I think the problem with manual transmission cars hopping is in the torque tube. The long, thin driveshaft acts as a torsional spring. It winds up, the tires, loose traction, it releases then winds up, the tires spins, and so on. Once the tires start moving up/down a bit the whole problem gets worse. If the resonant frequencies of the drive shaft and springs, or tires, are close (or factors of each other) then it'll keep going and get worse.

Automatics don't have the problem because the torque convertor acts as a cusion or damper for the system.

I had big hop problems when the shocks (Boges) were shot. New Boges solved that problem. Going to stiffer springs and Konis brought it back occasionally.

Hmmm, the poll says a lot.

FWIW my SC'd GT wheel hopped in 3 gears. My 90 GT has a bilstein / eibach set up and hops...

I wonder how many of the manual-no hop guys have an open diff.?

My GT used to experience wheel hop. That was before the blower. Nice and smooth now.

My ex '90 S4 never wheel experienced wheel hop. Then again, it couldn't spin the wheels either (unless I did a brake stand).

My 91 GT hopped as soon as it spun the wheels.

My results are consistent with the norm. The '83 Euro 5 sp/ LSD hops and the '88 Auto with open diff does not.

I have had some hopping before, but rarely. In my most recent experience, no hop.

I believe that the trend is that cars with LSD tend to have wheel hop. But only those that have enough power to break free the wheels from traction.

The GTS would spin the wheels if launched at 2500rpm with the old MXX3's and new shocks. Now with the PS2's It hops a bit at 2500 and will leave 2 20 foot long marks if launched at 3k. Expensive fun so I try to avoid.

don't think I'd worry about wheel hop as much as fixing that smoke problem bill... hehehehe...

only 2x w/my old gal w/open diff, goodrich comp 18x285/30's and AT. but tires were at the end of a brutal 1500mi life. both times were after spinning insanely for about 150'... near the end of the spin/burnout at about 50mph I noticed some vibration... but they were so bad (core was poking out) I couldn't do over 75mph w/out bad out of balance vibes either.

new set of 295/30 PS2's didn't the 1 time I "broke them in"... at $750 a pair, I doubt I'll do much more "testing" like that, but they do hook up a LOT better than the goodyear stuff (also 1/2 the treadwear rating)...

custom LSD is being built.... will probably do a test session at local 1/4mi strip after install and next "tuneup" to see what happens w/the new combo of mis-spent $$... I'll let you know

isn't the rear wt and track a bit different AT vs 5 speed?? springs/shocks different maybe?

I have an A/T LSD and can spin the wheels until the rims come off the tires if i really wanted to.

No wheel hop whatsoever.

I have a Bilstien/Eibach/LSD suspension and the car is lightened about300lbs(i am sure that has some effect on the equation) with 245/45/16s all around on 16x8 rear/16x7 front phonedials..

Had a mini discussion with Kim Crumb, the originator of the Eibach progressive
spring kit for our 928. Eibach was reluctant to produce such a low volume kit but
Kim C. volunteered his time and thus the kit was born.
Kim had specc'ed the progressive springs for Koni Adjustable shocks.
(No Koni vs. Bilstein flame wars please.)

So any of you wheel-hopping LSD tripping 928's running Bilstein/Eibachs?
And any non-hopping 928's with Koni/Eibachs?

1 vote for hopping 88' S4 with Bilstein/Eibach 5-speed LSD.

My '81 auto doesn't hop. BTW: automatics have more torque on startoff.
...

Is it the suspension, the fast shaft, or the entire driveline which causes the problem?

Do '78 5-speeds have the problem? They have the wee shocks on the differential.

If it is the driveline, you could make a bracket to fit on the rear cover, using the existing bolts, and a single shock - perhaps a steering dampener shock, attached to (?) to dampen the wind up of of the engine/TT/trans.

My non-hopping '88 S4 A/T has LSD and the Crumb spec'd eibachs and externally adjustable koni's.
