I removed all the bolts for the water pump and want to ensure that I get them back in the right position.
The attached picture was compiled by Ernie - thank you Ernie - however it does not locate the position of the one extra long bolt that penetrates the water jacket or the position of the bolt that locates the lower TB cover.
Anyone know the answer please?
I have 13 bolts and there are 14 holes
7x 25mm long
5x 20mm long
1x 30mm long
Car is an 87 S4
I will update the picture with the answer.

Roger,
I can't remember the "long bolt" location but an easy way to find the proper long/short configuration is that when they are in the proper places, they all protrude the same distance on the other side. I think you could probably just hold the cover up to the block and see where the hole in the cover lines up w the pump.

I don't recall there being one odd ball longer bolt when I pulled mine apart, but there is now because I stripped one and used a longer (and 30 mm sounds right) bolt to affect a repair. I know this doesn't help your problem but if when you put all the bolts through as stated above and you can not determine which one gets the longer odd ball you may have to determine which hole is partially stripped.
Roger,
I just found some notes I made last year when I did my '82. They indicate that one of the bolts that secures the waterpump goes thru the cover so you can't put it in until you're closing things up. It's the one just below and left of the right locater pin. Hold your cover up to double check it though..the notes were a bit 'stained'. Also, there is a bolt that goes on the tensioner that is also mounted thru the cover. Again, my messy notes say that of the 4 bolts going into the tensioner, it's the top left on the tensioner assembly. Re length of bolts on the tensioner, I've got some confusing notations that say that the top right is the shortest, the bottom left is 5 mm shorter than the bottom right...hope you can figure it out....it must have made sense to me at the time. Hope this is of some help...note to self: take more coherent notes next time!

Roger,
Jim has the bolt location correct .... see the 'empty' hole in the first pic ( on an S4 BTW), which is for the center cover bolt.
Follow WICruiser for placement of the other 13 - equal penetration is the goal - hope that sounded OK.
If you truly wish to win the Boy Scouts badge for the most **** wrench on the block, you need to follow the method in the second pic ... with the worlds smallest torque wrench ....

The TB cover bolt goes through the hole Jim has indicated.
My problem is that one of my bolts is 30mm were as the others are either 25mm or 20mm.
Maybe the 30mm is a red herring???
I am just going to replace it with either a 20mm or 25mm.
Thanks for your help.

Roger,
For peace of mind you can always check the PET program to make sure you've got the right sizes in the right places. I took a look at the pet for my '88 and didn't see any 30 mm for the tensioner, covers or the water pump.

The holes are deep enough to accomodate a 30mm. Not positive they are threaded that far, however. I mooched one of the holes and tapped the threads all the way down and used a 30 IIRC.

Bill: the hole you point out is the dead hole where there is a key stud, no bolt.

Okay, you guys, I got this installed this afternoon no prob. All the bolts are in the right spots, the 30mm was a left over from a prev TB/WP job. Most of the bolts had a bit of alum in the threads so I know one may have been longer to 'repair' a semi-stripped location.
Heinrich, that is not correct. The hole identified with the arrow is a bolt hole and takes a 25mm. The hole up and to the right is the alignment boss. We cleaned and die-dressed the bolts and used anti-sieze on all of them. I hand torqued all of them to exactly 6" Lbs, or what ever it is. Didn't even need no fancy little ladies torque wrench(for which, I am horribly jealous)
