I would like to see if this is still true with the aluminum doors of the 928, the book says that it will not go through metal or liquid well but could go through a composite or fiberglass easily.
A friend of mine is what I would call a car electronic's guru. The remote start on his GTI works over 1/2 mile away (yes we did test this). He can be in the bay working on cars (surrounded by concrete) and his car will start in the front parking lot. I think it runs on a 900mhz or higher frequency.

The auto start when I get close could get annoying - whoops, forgot my sunglasses, car started again. Walk out into my garage to grab something with my keys in my pocket - 928 fires up. Forgot to take it out of gear, new garage door.
Yea, it's fun scaring the cat but then there is the problem of the asphyxiated dog. If the car goes through the door -- problem solved.

Yes I love those systems and have got them to go far, this system is passive however and the access card has no internal powersupply to activate. The coil antenna in the reader transmits out and powers the access card allowing it to activate the relay circuit.

Thus the need to be so close to the antenna and the ability to not start your car if you forget your [insert item here]. It is mentioned in the book to be a convenience in situations when your hands are full with groceries or superchargers and need to have the doors unlocked to empty your hands.

You could have a second system in the trunk area that would just unlock the hatch and not start the car.

Also the system is 125khz, mhz (megahertz) is greater than khz (kilohertz). Just like a MB is greater than a KB in computer language, 1 mb = 1,000 kb.

Also I believe that this solves the Tacoma, WA problem of a ticket if your car is left on without you in it. Limited range means you can't start your car while trying to find things in your pocket or if you lean against an object in the store. You could just always move to Olympia (born and raised).

Any device which has the ability to start a car ...has the ability to start the car and might just decide to do it when it wants to plus adding electrical complexity to a 928 seems like a BAD IDEA to me.

Continuing on Jim's theme... when I first got my current 928 I posted on here about having a remote start system malfunction in a very interesting way. The P.O. did not tell me it was in there and may not have even been aware of it for that matter (2nd owner). I was washing the car and the starter began cranking the engine over, nothing I could do to stop it until I yanked the battery (-) cable. Turns out there was a Viper alarm module mounted above the fuse panel and due to a clogged drain in the blower fan box, the water backed up & overflowed into the fuse panel, filling the alarm module with water. The remote start relay shorted... I am not sold on this needless feature, to say the least. That alarm system came outta there 15 minutes later!

Seems to me it just makes it for the kidnappers to stuff you in the car headfirst and make their getaway. ;-Q
