I flew over and rented an Alfa Romeo w/ paddle shifters once. It was very nice. I drove through Germany then Austria then Italy and back again. I'm sure it would be cool to bring your own car but the $$$ and logistics are gonna be a problem for most people. Good luck planning the trip. BTW the unlimited speed areas on the autobahn are getting to be more rare as the years go by. Get to them while you can.

$1200 would be cheaper than renting a car there if longer than a couple of weeks. Will also give me time to put my car back together (handy if you want to drive it). This sounds like a great idea.

How much does a gallon of gas cost in Germany now? Don't forget that in your budget.

Hmmm...

Getting TO the Ring:
- Driving Dad's BMTroubleYou or
- Riding with one of the local 928 owners

Riding ON the Ring
- with Anders in the Cup car or
- in a well driven 928 of another Euro928 attendant

I think there are anough choices to justify leaving my car here... But then there is temptation!

Rich,

It's about $6/gal... Yes, that should be budgeted as well.. However, 100 octane at my local Unocal 76 is also $6/gal...

It's also true, that to rent a decent car for 2 weeks will cost you about $1000..... Mercedes E 270CDI/350, CLK, BMW 525/530D etc... If you are lucky, you can get a BMW630 or MB CLS 350 for about $1200..

Not cheap, but then, this is not going to be done every day either...

This is a really neat idea! My company is slated to close down my location in Nov of 2007, so we're rushing to move everything out and migrate it to Florida. I expect that we would be done with this project half-way-through 2007, and i'll have a nice severence check when its all said and done. Could be perfect timing.... Also gives me some time to find a 928 and start doing fun things to it

After I win the Lotto, I'll pick up my "Tourist Delivery" CGT at the factory then meet up with you folks at the 'ring. That way I'll save shipping one way...

You need to be careful about taking a rental car to the 'ring. I've read that companies, such as Hertz, are sending "life time ban" letters to renters after somehow observing the rental car driving on the 'ring. It is not known if they hire spotters, have GPS tracking in the car, or what. Also, some companies are expressly including an exception to driving on the 'ring in the rental contracts.

I didn't have rental trouble in the past, but new technology enables all kinds of snooping!

I know a lot of people who regularly fly down and rent a car to bash around the ring. Nobody has ever had any problems.

The Nordschleife is a part of the national road network and there is no legal way that rental companies can ban people from driving on specific roads.

They can't ban you from taking the car to the Ring - that's true. But they can ban you from renting from them! Trust me - been there done that! That's why I have my VW Golf GTI 16v in Koln and I plan to use my 928 GT-R on the odd sunny weekend in July, August and September...

P.S. I am deffo going to EURO928 at the Ring. If anyone wants pax laps in the GT-R, you are more than welcome!

Last time I was at the Ring, it got very busy on the track in the afternoon so I walked around the car park talking to people about their cars. It was incredible how many had rentals; maybe 25% or more...
Also helped a guy with a rented BMW adjust his tracking after he came off at the Karussel; went into it too fast he said.

Considering how many rental agencies in the US are in independently owned and operated, I seriously doubt anyone renting a car in Europe will have any issues back in the states.

Few years ago some rental agencies tried sucking more money out of customers using GPS systems claiming they exceeded the maximum speed per their rental contract. These cases were thrown out of court.

It sounds nice having you guys over in ol' Europe! I'm sure I'll be there. Racing in Zandvoort would be nice as well. It is a nice circuit and has been lengthened some time ago.

It would be an idea to buy a cheap boxter for the occaision, ship it in, drive it here and sell it? Maybe not as much fun as your own 928, but an option. I think the boxters in America are cheaper than here. And they will be easier to sell than a 928.

I'll bet it would take 3 weeks or more for shipping each way. And as far as cost, we're talking about 3 weeks in Germany (gas prices, yikes!) with all the expenses normally associated with a 3 week European vacation. Plus, 3 weeks off of work, if you can even get it. I would figure $6-7k for one person, add $2k more if you bring a SO. And you burn 3 weeks of vacation all at once.
