Maybe you are just nervous?

Otherwise my vote is for steering rack

Update:

Those who guessed rack were correct.

Those who guessed rack bushings were also correct.

Just got word from Devek that the rack is completely shot. Bushings also done. I am the king of wearing parts out utterly and completely.

Thanks Bill for your offer. Bay Area 928 owners are lucky to have you around.

Gerry & Sara - Wow I'm glad you finally got onto that track. It's about time. Hopefully Sara's ride was more fun than scary.

Too bad you didn't have time for solid mounts.

I am still smiling from my ride! Hopefully we'll be able to ride along at other tracks and that your car is ready for Track Time @Infineon this weekend.

Dennis,
Might I suggest you upgrade to Carl's 928 Motorsports solid bushings? I replaced my bushings with new factory bushings, but I think I am going to drop the rack again and install some solids.

Edit: Whoops, didn't read the above posts closely enough.

Dennis:

I have a set of solid rack mounts. Let me know if you want me to drop them off at DEVEK.

Bill -

You gotta be kiddin' me . . . you have a set??? You're like some kind of 928 superhero or something. If you could get them to Devek, I'd appreciate it so much. I didn't even think about going to solid mounts. I'll order a set to replace yours.

Dennis,
You don't need special solid rack mounts. Washers about 1/8" thick above and below the rack works fine and does the same thing. Marc knows how to do it, or I can send you some pics.

Louie -

Thanks for the advice. I'll give them a call at the shop tomorrow. At the very least it'd worth it not to send Bill on a trip through Bay Area traffic . . .

Louie - you're giving out all your secrets!

Dennis - I can't get there until noon, so see if Marc can do the washer trick. If noon is OK, I can drop the mounts off if needed.

Louie, so is it that the washer must fit the bolts very tight?

Yeah, I know, but Dennis is in a bind so I thought I'd try to help.
The washer doesn't need to be very precise except for thickness. Thicker is better than thinner. The thickness of the washers has to be slightly greater than the height of the steel center part of the original bushings. That's the only critical part. You can use two thinner washers one on each side if that works out better. The inside hole diameter has to be a bit larger than the outside diameter of the steel center of the bushing. IIRC, 17mm or 3/4" ID works. After the rotted rubber of the original bushing is removed, it's plain to see what needs done. I've done this on all my 928s and it works fine. Here are some pics. I made the washers in the pics from aluminum round stock just because it was easier than going to the hardware store. If you can find SAE washers, they are harder and thicker than the normal low quality Home Despot type. I believe they should be around 0.130" thick. The bottom pic with the two different washer thickness is from a different car than the top two pics. I used what I had on hand.

Louie I cannot imagine why ojn earth you would be reluctant. The washer option was posted LONG BEFORE someone took the idea from Rennlist and marketed it. YES i know another someone has been selling washers for years as spacers, but you know Louie, if you're gonna profit from a set of 5-dollar washers in that way, IMHO you are on your own. No offense. SO ... thank you for posting ... I really disagree substantially that just because someone knows how to perform a particular job on the 928, it now becomes his or her method and never shall anyone breathe a word to help others because "Dude owns this idea".
