Default Cabrio/Speedster

My wife's cabrio is going into the body shop next Wedsday for a full strip and repaint. It needs to have some of the old conversion work redone as it is showing some cracks and bubbles here and there. The shop I use has a strong backround in composites and the owner is someone I turned on to 928's many years ago (I'll try to get a pc of his amazing yellow 82'5spd for you) . He is going to shoot a mold of the rear deck pc that makes the car a cabrio. The plan is to be able to use it to create new cabrio decks and also to eventually make a new deck for our car that has the twin headrest "humps" and covers the back seat. Long term plan is to use a stripped shell that I have to mock things up and to also cut down the windshild , speedster style. I think it might look really good. If it looks stupid, well..it was going to the boneyard anyway.
Would anybody have serious interest in getting any of these parts? If so, more effort would go into better molds.....if not, I would just treat it as a one off.

Tony,

Great concept photo! that is pretty much what I have in mind but I don't think I'll be doing anything that drastic with the rear light treatment.

That picture is inspirational !

YES!!! Just my thoughts!!!!!!! I was going to have a deck fabricated for mine and quite possibly just keep it a roadster(NO SOFT TOP)

Your car looks very nice compared to what I have seen out there. It seems like the cabrio's get beat up.

Here is my ...eh hem...Frankenstein (das ist Franckenstine)

Keep me informed on what you do...you can PM if you like as I have several ideas for the car already.

Ironically enough (just a tad off topic), I just got a Gemballa brochure for when they made the cabrio's back in 86...nice car, but the price was $185,000!!!

You should be able to unload those front fenders to some track junky Kieth. Seeing what you have donewith the Jag, looking forward to seeing the cab up and running.

how they heck did they get that front rub strip to make the bend on that flare!

Keith,

Our cab has the top that folds and stores completely under the rear deck, out of sight. At one time the decklid and top were powered but these feature were disabled before the car came to me. I actually think the top looks great when up. So far the only time we raised the top was when we parked the car for the winter.
On the car I plan to build, I agree with you ... no top needed. It's a sunny weather car only and I would be happy with simple a snap on cover in case I had to park it outside or in the rain. Fabbing a top mechanism and dealing with storing it are the worst parts of building a cab. (IMHO).

When I cut the roof the plan is to cut it and take pics in various stages of roofectomy....targa, then roll bar band, then convertible and finally short windshield spider. It's only a test shell, after the chopping and mockup it goes to the boneyard. (although Stan has mentioned getting it back for a roofless racer idea ....)

Sorry if this is slightly off topic. Do you have any pictures or info on how your top was motorized? I am thinking about motorizing mine.

Catharsis here ... I just realised what they've been missing with the Cab 928's ..... here's my story. You look at a 928 ... what's the most unique styling feature? .... THE ROOFLINE. Kill that and you basically have a Chev or Opel.

Now, what if we nade a true targa and retained the lovely roof line .... with ALL that GLASS back there ... yummy!!!!

Before I let too much out about my car, I will say that I have been working on a Loooonnnnggg story of this particular car. Hopefully I will finish the story soon and post to the Rennlist. I have all of the answers as to how this car came to be and why things look the way they do.

At some point, I would like to put together a list of all of the cabriolet owners and compile a "registry" so to speak like Chucks...or maybe we could convince Chuck at some point to make a section on his list someday....would be rather cool. I know a few folks who have cabs and I think they are a very cool thing regardless of what Father of Gadzooks (I mean Godzilla) says!

About the chopped windshield, you had better have your seating right on the floor or you are going to have your head in the wind. My head almost touches the roof in my other 928's, so I know I certainly wouldn't fit in a chopped windscreened car. Speaking of Targa, this is kind of what my cabrio is. It is a drop top targa. There was a hard piece that fit between the windshield and the targa bar...long gone though.

Very elegant conversion. Nice lines. Who did it? Do you have other pix anywhere?

How is the cowl rigidity after the conversion? Are the cracks and bubbles related to "working" b/c of less torsional strength?

Tass,
I was planning to do the same thing for my car but got sidetracked by projects for the other 5 cars. I'm definitely interested. Just want more details before I commit. We must establish similarities between our cars so that the outcome is useable. Do you have a shot of your car with the rear deck hinged up? I'll look for a pic of mine and post

thanks

Tarek
