I'm thinking if you have solid steering rack bushings, you can delete the reinforcement plate under the rack.

I missed that listing. Do the impact tubes look like this? Do the tubes extend into the body as far as the shocks?

And here is where the weight is saved: No. They don't. What you see there is what you get. The plate that bolts to the car is just that - a plate. The pipe is very thin walled, and you have the dumbell shapped verticle rod for the big bolt that holds the bumper ( Heavy bolt )

I will have solid steering bushings, and that plate is very heavy. I DO however, lift the car from there. Hmmm.

If I put a bumper back in, I'm going to make a set of those. They are thin walled so as to crush on impact, versus carrying around a shock aborber.

Nope, feels the same.

I saved the cover just in case there was some issue, but it feels the same to me.

Oh, took the grille out of my shark too. Weighs maybe 5lbs. I like the look better without it on there anyway.

All heat shields are removed as well. Some soft weave with a sticky back will be installed, but not so much.

Many of the welded brackets have been drilled out as well.

No windshield washer tank and 5 (how much does a gallon of water weigh?) gallons of washer fluid.

Cruise control servo in driver's fender area is gone - boy - THATS heavy.

Power ant. gone - something rubber that way goes.

Again, all this is WITH two big roles of raamat sound insulation. I want to be able to talk on the cell phone and hear my Trance Music, Evanescense, and Allison Krause.

I have to pull the cruise control assy. I havn't messed with that yet. GOOD to hear that it actually weighs enough to be worth the effort.

I actually would like to scrape the factory sound deadening(which i hear is a nightmare) in my 928S and then simply lay a new interior carpet over the original carpet. It's a lot lighter than the sound deadening, and is actually pretty effective wrt sound insulation.

However with my exhaust, no amount of sound deadening would ever keep the noise out. Not that i'd want that anyway.

Don't come back to me when you have cancer, but a nice propane torch and a gas mask will make that crap come right up with a heavy duty scraper. Its on t he floors, rear panels, and the center area. The rest is foam and loose rubber - all very heavy, very stinky, and room for improvement.

Awesome. The rack plate* is so outa there.

I replaced my gills with critter wire, which keeps trash (and critters) out of the radiator. Later I read in a car aerodynamics book that the grill slats slow the air speed down, so it flows through the radiator better.

Remove the engine.

How about lighter rims? You can save like 3-4 pounds per wheel. Sunroof, and sunroof motor? Extra speakers? Audiophiles will tell you that all you need is 2 speakers, so get rid of the extra ones. Or you could always just nix all the audio ocmponents but then you can't listen to Trance.

Does anybody know what the rear hatch weighs, what does the rear glass weigh also, I used to know the weights but they have slipped my mind. I was going to make a rear hatch in carbon as I have a spare hatch to canobolize. Also the sunroof weighs 6 kgs, a carbon one would only weigh 1 kg. I think if somebody made high quality versions of these parts there would be a market although a small one.

What was the quality like of the aftermaket bonnets? I know they did have that big scoop in them but what was the finish quality like? At the local Porsche centre they have lots of race cars and they often have carbon panels, the quality is variable, from great to ordinary and we better not look to close at that.

The rear hatch and sunroof would be great spots to loose weight from, does lexan though even have the clarity of glass? I don't think so myself. Maybe stay with glass and get a carbon hatch? The other thing that is really heavy are the linings, especially the roof and hatch linings, more than 6 kgs there alone.

Cheers Greg
