The rear hatch and sunroof would be great spots to loose weight from, does lexan though even have the clarity of glass?
For the rear hatch, does it all need to be see-through? Maybe 2 pieces of aluminium with a strip of clear plastic to give a see through slot at a suitable height - like level with the rear view mirror - bit like a Lamborghini.

The rear hatch is heavy, but not bad. It gets worse with all that glass. The glass would be a great removal option. Spekter products does the rear hatch, but I want a tinted one. There is also a local place that does polycarbonate, and I was going to check on whether they could make a duplicate.

Well There are a few different sources. I bought mine from a guy on ebay named: HIPERFORMANCEUSA on ebay. His email is that @aol.com
Carl sells a slightly different kind (he originally sold what the guy above sold and what I bought two of)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...spagenameZWDVW
You can also get them from 928intl - they will be a tilton brand and closer to 250 I think.
Usually there are about 7 pounds or more saved. The torque rating is higher I think, and highperformance mentioned he would be getting a "2.0" one instead of a 1.X something. I think its HP or KW or something. I don't know.
But what I do know is that the originals are heavy, unreliable suckers after 20 years! And the ones I have are Toyota starters with the front of a 928 starter graphted on.
They are featherweights compared to the bosch ones.

The light from a colored* acrylic sunroof panel is very nice, and the plastic is quite clear.** When I sit in other folks 928s, I realize how dark they can be inside.
For the hatch, if you have aluminum struts to hold the polycarb or acrylic, you can use thinner plastic, which wont need forming. I used a cheap wet tile saw to cut acrylic, with great results.
I would like to try see the whole hatch skin made from acrylic, painted to look like the factory hatch, with a minimal tubular structure under it.***

*I have a bronze color, to look like my factory glass.
**I hope to have a proper panel formed after I get through the bulk of the lift bar orders.
***I'm stuck with how to reuse the S spoiler, as it wants to sit down in a channel on the sides.

Why would anybody want the interior of a 928 to be well lit; do you plan to play a game of bridge in the vehicle?

Sometimes its nice to have a well-lit interior. It makes the drive more pleasant.

This is a great thread. Weight saving is the reason why the Lotus cars perform so well. It certainly isn't because of an overabundance of HP.So far there really hasn't been much mentioned that would negatively effect structural integrity, so this is only at a cost of some creature comfort. Nice.
Greg, There is already a CF hatch or two floating around. The gentleman who owned them was selling his racer and including both CF hatch's w/ the purchase. Perhaps someone here knows who this was.
Personally I am not to the point where I am going to start stripping my car to get a little better performance. But It is nice to read these things. If certain repairs arise, I can implement certain weight saving ploys such as the starter Brendon mentioned. Good work guys. Keep 'em coming.

Mark A. had hihs entire car dipped. I found the last remaining acid dipper guy in LA. I may do that to my 89 just to see what kind of car it would be. Then I would have some seams welded.

Shaving 500lb from the same car would be akin to adding about 70 horsepower*.
IOW, if you shave 500lbs from your shark- you basically just added the effect of a supercharger, but without the cost.
Currently i am about 300lbs under stock, and i have a 95% intact interior, with all creature comforts installed but the A/C system. I can easily shave another 100lbs without doing anything that will make the interior or exterior look any different to the casual eye.
* = how much power will be 'added' is a matter of the adjusted power to weight ratio, and is a floating(ie non-fixed) figure based on power/weight.

As to the lexan sunroof, that is not what I meant at all, I was talking about lexan for the rear glass nothing else.
As to starter motor, I can buy them here for $350 Aud and that works outs cheaper than $258 for Carl, have those starters gone up recently? I did recall that they were a lot cheaper before? Maybe I'm wrong, normally though things are cheaper in the States but not this time it seems, the Aussie one weighs in at 4kgs.
Cheers Greg
