Default Windshield Help?

Can anyone on the West Coast, who's recently had Safelite or other franchise install a windshield, send me the name and phone number of the company? I've gone nuts here on the East coast. Safelite and all the others insist that they can only get the Porsche OEM glass, which installs for around $1200. What I want to do is see if I can get someone at your end of the nation, who evidently can get the aftermarket glass, ship it to me here so my installer can put it in. That should'nt cost more than half the price they're quoting me here, yes?

Incidentally, I won an eBay bid in early January for a Sekurit windshield. But the seller completely stiffed me: cashed the check, never delivered the glass, and doesn't answer phone or email queries. Ebay now has it as a dispute/claim. I'll post particulars later so no one else gets taken.

All Star Glass here on the West Coast has never had any trouble getting OEM glass for me. Previous times they had it in-stock for immediate installation at the local shop. The last time it took them a day to get the glass - this was about a week ago. Glass has been from PGI, Pilkington, and last time from XYG. All were perfect except the most recent XYG which has some slight waviness in one or two spots. XYG is Chinese whereas the other two were Australian and South African. Pilkington has US plants.

One variable is antenna-in-glass. If you have that, it might complicate the process. All Star claims thay can still get it but other people reports problems getting it.

Dispatchers for glass installers often have very incorrect information. Keep calling around, but be suspicious of anything you here until they say they actually have the glass.

If you want, call my local All Star Glass in Walnut Creek, CA at (800) 813-8626.

Sorry to hear you got stiffed on eBay. Was this the guy in Columbus, OH? Somebody should pay him a visit.

I just bought one from Pro Source Glass in New England. Total cost was $545.00. 395 was the windshield, the rest was freight (was shipped from Colorado in a heavy cardboard & wood crate) Green tinted & shaded with antenna. Pilkington Glass (South Africa) Good glass. The bronze Sekurit shield was about $30.00 cheaper.

Guys:
Many thanks for your quick responses. Two hours after I posted the first thread my garage phoned to tell me the windshield was in! (My garage is in MD; I'm in FL for a month.) I paid this eBayer on Jan 4th. Despite his promise to ship within a week, it was more than 30 days before I got the glass. Yeah, I think he's located just outside Columbus OH. Well, anyway, I guess all's well that ends well. Even so, I truly appreciate your help.

Guys be careful when reinstalling upper molding! After I requested a experienced installer @ Safeglass, they majorly screwed up by reinsalling it off centered, leaving a big gap on one side. After a few harsh words they attemped to correct the problem... Crack!! Yes they cracked the new windshield and damaged the upper & side molding in the process. Its been three weeks now and no upper molding. From what I've researched it's coming from Germany since they can't locate any here in the states. I thinking of having them reinstall the windshield and not the moldings. I know I won't scew them up installing them myself, even if I tried.

The upper moldings are the most troublesome. All of my installers got them on correctly, but they did have some trouble. The glass people probably ordered the trim from Porsche. They don't know we have 928 suppliers other than Porsche, a couple of whom appear to have the upper trim in stock.

I also encountered problems when the glass shop here installed a new windshield and got the upper molding off center. I left it like that since they had already screwed up by cutting the A pillar upholstery piece leather with a saw or knife and left a deep cut. I had a spare part but the whole thing irritated me. They try to beat the clock and screw the whole process. My upper molding end pieces are a pain to get on properly now. And the glass was OEM which started pitting again as soon as the wind blew some dust on it. I would find an American glass windshield when I change it again, and for less money.
