Drove home- 1 mile fast, 16 miles in SLOW traffic. Turned off stereo- heard humming motor like noise from back of car-could not track down-no noise when engine off- noise appears only when engine starts.
Any wisdom appreciated in advance.

Fuel pump? Jumper the fuse to make the fuel pump run while the engine is off to see if it makes that noise.

Mike, there are other things that can cause the pump to make noise, like a restriction(filter or horked in-tank pump). Best bet is to pull it out and run some fuel through it in isolation to see if it's noisy by itself. Never run it dry!

Some fuel pump noise is normal - you need to do a LOT of checking before buying a fuel pump.
Start by pulling the cover from the pump and checking while the engine is running. Look for the pump, the filter, or any line, even a rubber one, touching the body - everything should be supported on rubber noise isolators.
While most filter replacements are unnecessary, it doesn't hurt to change it to see if the noise level drops - a partially plugged filter will increase the fuel pump noise slightly.
