Default Buying A Shark & Tuner Needed

Hello All:

I "was" a regular on the 944T boards until a few weeks ago when my 1989 944T was stolen. The Rennlist Gods were nice enough to post my thread up top which can be seen here https://rennlist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247509

Anyway, I have a feeling that I'm never going to see my car ever again. That being said, I am starting to do research into buying a Shark. At this point it is just gathering info before I consider doing anything, if anything at all. But, I thought I'd introduce myself and see if a few people could help me. If I ever do buy a Shark, I am looking for some good tuners in the New Jersey/New York area. I'm not looking for a regular Porsche dealer, but someone that really knows these cars, is familar with modifying them, and has maybe built a few high BHP ones too. When I had my 944T, I didn't find anyone in NJ that I thought was creditable, so I don't want to buy a Shark and not have a place to bring it to. If you guys know of any companies in NJ, NY or CT, please let me know. If they have web addresses, that would even be better too. Of course I'd love to buy a Shark and ship it to someone like Devek, like I did with my 944T and Lindsey Racing, but I don't see this being an option now. Well that's it. You guys have some really, really awesome cars, one I would love to own and build-up big time!!

Also, if you guys know of any web sites I can look for quality Sharks let me know. I am leaning toward a S4/GT with a 5spd. I'm looking at eBay, Auto-Trader, Cars.com, PCA, and Rennlist.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

You ask a tough question. I'm going to assume the reason you don't want a Pcar dealer is $$. And most Pcar dealers ignor 928s anyway for the same reason. That being said, most of us here are doing at least part of the work whether routine maint or tuning, ourselves for the same reason. Therefore there are very few shops that are knowledgable about sharks and getting fewer. There is a shop in brooklyn that has been mentioned here so infrequently that I don't recall the name, motorsport(?). There is a shop in Ft. Lee that was recommended to me, I'd have go through a pile of receipts at home to find a number, and Rennwerke in Elmsford, ny, just off the Sawmill. I had a PPI done at Rennwerke and the shop looked terrific, he had a couple 928s in for work and a track car in the yard. He had mostly Pcars in there, but is not a dealer. I have no other basis to recommend, Cheech races, his number is 914-592-4006, he is partial to a beautiful 914-6 that I think was his. HTH.

I am not aware of anybody but David Lloyd and the Gang in I think CT. I am not sure of thier website, but they are very helpful to many on that coast I believe.

As I mentioned to you earlier, we don't specifically have a "vitesse" or "millege" unit for 928s. There are "suppliers" such as 928 specialists in the SE, and 928intl and Devek in CA. They have "kits" for various things like suspension and brakes, and indeed 928specialists will have a very well done twinscrew kit available soon (or now?).

And of course, my favorite, there is Tim Murphy, in Wisconsin. He has 556 to the wheels on his own car, and he makes a wonderfully complete Vortech kit for all the later cars. These cars take boost very well, even with thier 9.2-10.00 compression ratios.

You can obviously see that there is also the "stroker" route. These are all things that you probably already know, but this thread will probably come into this realm of "what you can do" anyway.

I hear tell about a very interesting man in Wisconsin who may have a well designed solution if you would like 7.0L. He does all his own stuff, and is usually willing to work something out ($$) for others who are of the same interest. Imagine 7.0L and about 15psi from a Supercharger.

I know you are a turbo man. There are no front turbos for the later cars. Early yes, but no "kits" have been marketed per se.
Rear mount turbos are an option, and the power gets you over 400.

But since you already had 460 out of a four cylinder, I would expect you would want nothing less then 800 out of our 8cylinder.

If you want stock bore, and more then say, 13 or 15psi with proper tuning, then a deck plate may be in order from Dave Lomas and Garrity at motorsport in UT.

MY advice is to use those who have already helped you assemble your cars properly, and buy kits, while of course inventing new things.

BTW - if you wanted any sort of "build your own" 89S4 5spd sans engine and a few other things that you would build anyway, PM me. You will pay a very pretty penny for a mint 5spd of the years I think you are focused on, and you will take alot of it apart anyway.

Hey Rolex, great decision. You're going to love the 928 I bet you already know! For you, I highly recommend getting a 5spd. Maybe a GT. You can make a 928 a lot like a 951 by losing weight and with the right rear end.
... let me/us know if we can help. Btw I think some very knowledgeable 928 guys are up your way, like Gretch ....

Coming to the dark side, eh Rob? Nicole just posted a thread about a nice Bay Area 88 5 speed. They do come up occasionally. You already have a tip on a Jersey wrench, also 928 Specialists is in NC. They are ramping up a supercharger offering -- go here: http://www.928gt.com and click on the "Supercharged" link. This is an evolution of the setup that Tony ( http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/ ), Bill Ball ( http://billsworkshop.com/P928S4/supercharger.MOV ) and others are using. To be fair though, Tony just about completely redesigned his setup to suit himself. That's just what's close to you... there's lots more out there!
