Tom,

Take a number, been looking for those for a while. Can't remember the thread, but someone is looking to engineer some along with the tweeter plates. BTW, I found 1, doesn't do me much good unless I find the other side.

Bummer I'm in need of a set as well. I install the interior out of an '89 so I need the round speaker covers vs. the square old ones.

Here's the thread.

The rear woofer housings are (obviously) more of a challenge than the tweeters and mids. I'll take a look at the problem.

Come over to my house and I will take care of your woofer problems folks. In my rear yard sits a german shepard, he'll give you many woofers per minute. I would guess you can get at least 89 out of him in under a minute, talk about quick service!

And I'll bet he sounds better than the factory woofers.

It doesn't help maters that quite a few of us are cutting up perfectly good rears to instal MBQ's

When I did my audio upgrade, I would have traded my good rears for a set of blown ones (NC) if there was the opertunity at the time.

Default Speaker upgrade for my 1989 S4

Ok, so now I am confused. i just bought an '89 automatic. Very original condition. One of the things I was considering doing was putting in a new stereo. Problem is that it has the original single CD player, which people tell me I should leave in as it is a valuable original feature. Fine, I can use an FM transmitter to listen to my satellite radio. I'm ok with that. But I was going to at least upgrade the speakers, which don't sound totally aweful, but I am getting some rattling when I turn the bass up at all (I am not a bass fanatic, but I do like rounded out sound quality). So I have the 10 speaker setup (was that standard?) and was just starting to do research on sizes, recommendations, etc. Then I came along the post that people are looking for the woofers, which I am considering replacing. What am I missing? Will I have difficulty finding the right size? Or do some people just want to maintain the originality of their cars even more so than me. Thanks for clueing me in.

I should have a pair if you still need them. I do know of a place that will rebuild them.

For future reference, who rebuilds them?

The factory woofers are very unusal. When mine were in good shape, before they developed a rattle, they produced good bass. It's been a struggle to find anything else to throw in that hole, with it's unsealed cavity, that will do the job. So, most people resort to adding subs. If someone has a stock pair that are rattling, I would get them rebuilt as a first effort. There are DIY kits for the foam/rubber sutrrounds, but if the cone rattles or worse, they need professional attention.

Mark, you get wrecks in all the time. Why are these speakers, even if not so good, so unobtainable? I'd like to have pair, or the whole speaker layout, working or not.

We do buy almost a 928 per week for parts but if you look at the production numbers it helps explain why we do not have lots of 89-95 parts.

78-88 cars sold in USA 22k
89-95 3k

On top of just shear numbers, more later cars are repaired when damaged or restored.

Thanks for the link. If Tom doesn't go for the speakers, I will.

Even when we do get later model cars sometimes the speakers have already been changed

Yep, most do what I did when they start to rattle - gut them and swap in some aftermarket speakers into the surrounds - even good ones - then fuss and fuss to get them to produce anything but tinny vibrations. I've finally gotten good results with some mid-level MB Quarts and a bunch of polyester fill in the body cavity.
