All 84-86 Euros are S2s, except for about 74. Those 74 are 'catalyzed' cars and are basicly S3s. The only difference I've found (other than the standard marker lights, H4s, etc) between Euro S3s and US S3s are pistons, valves, and I'm assuming cams. The rated HP for the lower compression Euro S3s is higher (IIRC 292 than for the 85-86 US S3s (288). Does that make more sense?

basically S3s, being 5 liter 4valve?

i thought the 292 vs the 288 was a DIN HP rating vs US hp rating or something.

pistons? differences? valves, how different can they be? cams, i bet they are the same. ill have to check on that one!

Yes, 5L, 32V, huge intake. Rory here on Rennlist had one until somebody hit it. Then it went to 928Intl, then to a local. IIRC there was also one in PA or NJ.

If you look in the WSM you can see the differences in the pistons. The valve stem length measurements are also in there. The only reason I can see for the valve stem lengths being different is different cams. I didn't look carefully, but I don't remember seeing different cams in the WSM or PET. I didn't see the different valves or pistons in PET.

I think the US S3 is 288 SAE and 290 DIN. Really they're all within manufacturing variances, but the fact that Porsche rated the different S3s differently means something.

BTW, the M28/45/46 Euro S3 pistons are listed in 928 Specialists database in a couple tolerence groups. They would be a good choice for somebody boosting an S3.

I have a small technical specifications booklet that shows the DIN hp of 85/86 US engines as 292 and the DIN hp of 85/86 Euro engines as 310.
So what would be the SAE hp for a Euro engine? (Edit: 306hp).

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page...the Euro 84/85/86 engine was the 4.7L 16 valve 310hp-295 torque engines...the 85/86/86.5 US engine was the 5.0L 32 valve 288 (292)hp 302 torque...but the Euros are lighter at 3308lbs vs 3351-3439lbs for the US 5.0L..... So a true Euro S 5 speed should perform very well...especially at higher RPM's

The rating difference in HP are typical....the Euro S4's were rated at 320hp....which is USA SAE speak is 316hp....but it austrailia's system its even less at 310hp? (if I remember correctly or was it japan?)
