Default Help....Car will not start. Think it is the alarm.. Not alarm probably starter

So, I replaced my battery today and took the car out for a test ride.
Everything was fine until I stopped to get some ice cream for my daughter. Got back in the car and it will not start. Ended up calling Bill Ball for help. He came and looked things over and he thinks the alarm is still on and causing the non starting issue. Does anyone know the proper way to reset the alarm or disconnect it all together. I hope I can get a quick response here as daylight is waining.

Thanks in advance

Steve B

I had this happen on my 88 a few years ago on a cross country trip. So, stuck in Pennsylvania, Marc from Devek got on the phone with the mechanic and had him pull the relay for the alarm and jumper it I believe.

Yeah, I think we'll go back and pull the glovebox and jump 30-87 on the alarm module, but I wanted to check if that is the correct way. Also, I recall some trick to cycle the alarm, but whatever we did with the doorlocks, etc. did not help.

I'm pretty certain it is the alarm since Steve has power to everything but the starter, I can feel the starter relay click. I swapped the relay just to be sure, and that made no difference. So, it's acting like the alarm is interrupting power to the starter.

Would it help to set off the alarm, by locking the doors with the window open, then reaching in and opening the door with the inside latch? That should set off the alarm and blare the horn. Then reset with the key. Can that get the alarm back to normal?

This is probably too elementary, but have you tried setting the alarm back on by locking the car and unlocking it a few times? I assume you swapped out the fuse.

The final try on anything is to take the side panel off the console and lightly tap the alarm brain.

Unfortunately, the workshop manuals carefully avoid telling you how to bypass the system even as a test.

Let us know what you end up doing to get it started - it will inevitably happen to another one of us.

Good Luck

Rod

Okay Bill's way ahead of me.

Searching here reagrding alarm....relevant findings:

"Well, it was easier than expected. From another post about lock trouble, I thought I'd lock/unlock all doors and the hatch. And she started right up!"

"backnblack - I posted this last week:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ighlight=alarm
Dozman helped me out with some info he was sent by Wally! Basically, take off the glove-box, find the alarm control unit above, unplug the control unit and bridge the leftover plug terminals which were connected to the control unit terminals #15 and 87a"

FWITW, I have some faint recollection of pulling connector Z off the fuse panel and jumpering two pins - to deactivate the alarm interlock ... hope not to drop a 'red herring' here, but will look in the archives ....

Bill,
I rather thought that on all years the alarm disabled the power to the EZK not to the starter relay... (at least thats the way it is on my GTS) if the starter relay clicks but the starter doesn't engage - seems more likely the starter or starter solenoid is kaput! or could be a wiring issue to the starter...

Well Alan I think you are right. After jumping the alarm, the car did not start. Since there was power and the start relay was clicking, Bill thought starter. So, he jumped the fuel pump relay and we pushed the beast to the top of the nearest incline and with a pop of the clutch she started right up.

So, thanks to every one for the alarm info. Looks like I will be replacing a starter next weekend. As I said to Bill, I guess I don't need a second 928 to start working on one.

As many before have said, this forum is invaluable, especially for us nebie owners.

Before you replace it make sure that the grounds and power to the starter are all cleaned up. May just be a loose wire or dirty/rusted terminal.

OH!! Disconnect the battery first

Funny, I participated in other alarm threads, but I had to go re-read them again to see how to byapss the alarm. Old age.

So, the alarm does not disable the starter but rather the EZK. It definitely does not disable the starter relay, as I could feel it working.

So, now we suspect the starter. There was no solenoid click. Is the solenoid serviceable or replaceable?

What else could it be?:
- Ignition switch - since starter relay clicks, don't think so.
- Wiring - we will clean the connections and verify power.
- Starter relay - we have ruled that out.
- Ground - guess this is a possibility. http://www.nichols.nu/tip624.htm
