Considering getting a 928, thought I'd ask here first

Are you sure that you don't want an automatic? The kickdown on them is impressive and offers some shift-free accelleration at crusing speed.
You can expect to get a little more car for the money with automatics because they are more abundant.
You already have a 5 speed sports car. If it were me in similar circumstances, I would be open to an automatic 928.

I am 6' 6" and I fit comfortably in my '86 auto. It is actually more comfortable than many larger cars for me. My buddy that has an '86 944 N/A drove my 928 and has been hooked ever since. He is now looking for an 87 -89 S4.

Jerome posted Today...."After 14 years of endless pleasure, I must part with my 86.5 928S (VIN# WP0JB0928GS861816). I am the 2nd owner and have maintenance and upgrade receipts totaling $45K." The key, endless pleasure the downside $45,000. Head room is lacking ,at 6' 4" I have a hard time driving a sunroof equiped 928 ,with a helmet on I rub the headliner on a non sunroof 928 with shallow 944 manual seats. An extended hub steering wheel was available so the seat back could be reclined more without assuming the Italian staright arm driving style.

The auto is more manual then you may be aware of. I am all for 5speeds, but you already have a 5speed, and indeed, you must remember that the 5spd in the 928 is a dogleg down for first. Meaning you pull towards you, and then towards the driver's door to get to first. Then 2nd is up towards the dash and towards the passenger a pillar a bit.
Down, left. Up right, then the pattern is normal.
It takes some getting used to, and actually it can get comfusuing sometimes if you are not paying attention when you drive OTHER five speeds, such as your 951.
Drive an auto. If you don't like it, then move on. But give it a chance. Thats comming from me, which means alot as I am not a big fan of autos, but I have one.
Racing seats, when they are double wide, are quite a good idea if you are tall. I'm at 6'3", and about 240. If I move the seat basically all the way down I'm good, but I am hitting the sagging sun visor when looking out for merging on the Socal Freeways you know what I mean? The LEEEAAAN forward to see outside the normal mirror periferal?
If you are near San Diego you can come down and drive my auto. I don't have a 5spd running right now, but may in the spring.

thanks for the replies. there's a few 928's for sale around here, and more than a few autos. i will definetly check it out.
if it's good enough for other discerning Porsche enthusiasts, it should be enough for this mexican.
Are the AT's as strong as the MT's? or does it not really matter?

Hey Juan...
I was just talking to a fellow Rennlister about this a day or two ago... Just go test drive a good 928, be it AT or MT. Hopefully you can drive it around for a little while. What we talked about is "Getting IT"... if you do, you will be hooked and will probably make it your mission to buy one. You will understand if you do. If you don't "get it" it will just seem like any other car and you will walk away wondering what all the fuss is about. Those of us on the 928 Forum "Get It" which is why some of us are so fiercely loyal to it and blindly throw yearly salaries at these cars to keep them running! Good luck with your search!

well then i must "get it" about porsche in general. I refused to leave my first 944 with the guy that was selling it to me. i refused to leave my 951 witth the guy who had it (deep_purple), and i'm sure if i drive a 928, i'll refuse to leave it with the owner who has it at the time....so maybe i should hold off on it for a bit.....hahaha..
anyone else with info on ATvsMT tranny strength?
now i guess i've narroed down the search to a 86.5-up 928S....right? hahaha.

Way stronger; more consistent at the drag strip; nice to have in a "no cup holder" car; reigns supreme in rush hour traffic; prevents balding; improves vision; and the ladies are NO problem.
Alright, that might be a little over done, but the A/T's are great. Just take the time to experiment with manually shifting them.

You may not want to leave the 928 with the seller, but may I make a suggestion: Get a PPI before you drive the car. That way you won't waste your time. I think anyone who skips the PPI stage is either wishfully deluded, very wealthy, or a masochist. You could be shocked at prices for some repairs unless you do it all yourself. When I searched for my 928, I ate several PPI bills on cars I turned down, and I am glad I did. One of those cars was represented as in excellent condition, appeared to have good paint and interior, and the owner said I could drive it away without worry. I had Devek do a PPI and they found about $7000 worth of necessary repairs and deferred maintenance items, and that was probably the tip of the iceberg. Money well spent in my opinion.

This is for Jim Bailey. (Of course it doesn't apply to young guys like myself) Jim here is more of what to expect:
We are all getting older, and as we age, we begin to suffer the slings
and arrows of aging, which may or not be of outrageous fortune. There
is unsteadiness of gait, fading eyesight and hearing, and whatever
else. And no doubt, new diseases will be diagnosed. A new one has just
come up, called Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder, or in short
A. A. A. D. D.
This is how it manifests:
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide
my car needs washing.
As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch
table that I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage
can under the table, and notice that the can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage
first.
But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out
the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only 1 check
left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the
house to my desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking.
I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside
so that I don't accidentally knock it over.
I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the
refrigerator to keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the
counter catches my eye--they need to be watered.
I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses
that I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water
the flowers.
I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water
and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the
remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide
to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the
flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the
floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and
wipe up the spill.
Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day:
----the car isn't washed,
----the bills aren't paid,
----there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the co unter,
----the flowers don't have enough water,
----there is still only 1 check in my check book,
----I can't find the remote,
----I can't find my glasses,
----and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really
baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.
I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for
it, but first I'll check my e-mail.
Do me a favor, will you? Forward this message to everyone you know,
because I don't remember to whom it has been sent.
