Default S4 cooling fans on an older car

What is required? Where do the S4 fans get their signal? And I read the S4 fans take too much draw on current, how do they manage on an S4 then?

Heinrich,
I tried to use S4 fans on Gerry's '85. There was interference between the fan housing and the A/C tube below the right radiator hose. If you were really determined, you could change out the A/C line. I think there was interference with the engine driven fan support too, but sawed that off or something. First, I used an aftermarket 16" electric fan and found that marginally effective. The final fix was to use the Devek original dual fan shroud. It takes two 11" high output Spal fans and they work well. The package is thinner overall than the S4 fans. I think with the engine off and the fans on, it will pull the car along. Sort of electric limp home mode if your LH quits. Heh, heh.

H -

The S4 fans are driven by the standalone cooling circuit with the black box on the front area by the hood latch (finned) and the silver one that is usually under the passenger "stepover" cover next to the seat.

This system has a few parts, and runs the fans many different situations, high or low, or both (AC)

It also controls the front flap (which you removed), and IIRC, the "coolant purge" solenoid near the passenger shock tower.

It takes signals from the radiator, as well as the AC system AND it will turn the fans on at certain times when it simply feels like it. Oh, and it takes an input from the intake manifold temp sensor at the back of your S4 manifold. I saw MANIFOLD temp, as the bung does not go all the way through the magnesium as a AIT sensor would, so its basically testing how hot the manifold is, not the air.

Regarding the current, somewhere there is a diagram of how the fan controller works -- most of the time they are running at a fraction of capacity IIRC

Why would you have to worry about the mechanical fan support? Just take it out. I've thought about putting an electric fan in place of the engine driven fan. Some people (like Louie above) have said it doesn't work well. Why is that? I'd think one of the 3300 or 3600cfm Zircos could push/pull enough air.

I don't think he said that at all. He was just pointing out some obstacles to be dealt with.

I had the devek fans and rad on my 86.5 and never had a problem. I installed them to run full-time (probably a bad idea) and daily drove the car. I never had power problems as a result of this. I think I drove it like this for a few thousand miles.
