I have done this job twice, unfortunately. The rears are 4" the front ones I fitted retangular speakers that came with tweeters and woofers. They were shallow but needed to be modified, both the speaker unit and the door frame, both were fairly minor mods.

As to amps you probably don't need one, just remove all the old amp wiring and run from the head unit direct to the speakers. I have a Blaupunkt Sevilla which is a european looking stereo, as apposed to Blaupunkts current crop Christmas light display units. The other car has a VDO CD 138 I believe, again very factory looking and sounds excellent and doesn't jump with standard suspension.

I was told the Becker will be hard to see the display in the position it fits in the 928. Porsche omitted the option of veiwing from any angle and as such move the unit and it can become difficult to view. That came from a Becker dealer who had experience with this issue. He didn't want to sell it to me for this very reason.

Hope this helps

Greg

I have a Blaujunkt Monterey CD83 head unit going to a set of MTX separates in the doors (4" I think) and Blaujunkt 6.5 coax in the rear panels. Both sets of speakers have been modified by the PO to fit, actually looks fairly similar to the S4 design.

The stock Amp has been removed. At least there was nothing under the passenger floor board cover in mine? So this means the head unit is already driving the speakers itself, which can barely be heard over the EURO engine.

The GOOD news is that I have a bunch more space than factory under the seats (a few more sq inches). The PO replaced the factory seats with 944Sport seats which have lots of good stiff springs but very little padding. If the seat is never or barely moved there is tons of room under the rectangular seat for a tall amp also! So I am considering installing an amp (still not sure which brand) and removing the adjustment bar so that they cant be moved front or back.

Then I will have to fish the new cables and use as much of the previous speaker cable as possible (until I replace these junky speakers). DANG you should see the hack job done on the head unit and speakers by PO!! They actually spliced the wires together with those cone looking home wire connectors!! UGH! And all the head unit splices are about an inch of the head unit so there is maybe one more splice left before there is no cable left!!

This will be a fun job!!

I just went with Memphis seperates in all factory spots, and Memphis amps along with a set of 8'' Bazooka's all into a JVC HU. Now it's really a toss up between the exhaust and the sound system as to which one sounds better!

Memphis is serious equipment that few people even know about. Their most common claim to fame is the Diet Pepsi delivery truck that is seen in commercials. Memphis equipment also won the MECA '05 World Finals.

Crap.

So I'll need two (2) sets of 4" speakers then?

Any chance of fitting 5.25" speakers in the rear with minor modification to the speaker magnet? (I want to stay away from cutting up the car)

So, the Becker dealer was talking about all Becker head units or the CDR-220?

Is there any Porsche-labeled head unit that is viewable in the 928?

In my 89 the 4" rears have 1.5 inch mounting depth. You could enlarge the cutouts and reposition the screw clips, but you'd need some very slim speakers if your 4" holes are like mine.

I'm partway through my upgrade. I do not have the 6W0s yet, but short of that, ANYTHING I have installed does not produce even remotely adequate bass. I think the problem is the open cavity behind the stock "woofer" in the rear bolster. Something needs to be done to provide a smaller, sealed area to get any reasonable bass. Strange that the original stock speakers seemed OK in this regard. So, I added a small Clarion sub, unfortunately not small enough to hide anywhere, and it really rounded out the low-end.

Also, it will be a rare head unit that really does the speakers justice. I installed a Pioneer AVH-P7500 unit which has 22Wx4 RMS, 50 peak. It was pretty meek sounding. I installed the Farenheit 75Wx4 RMS external amp and the speakers really came to life. I just need to see how the 6W0s fit and perform. Right now with the small sub, 4" JBL P442 (superceded by P452) upfront, a 6.5" MB Quart component set in back, the sound is excellent.

The MB Quart tweeters fit the factory tweeter housing perfectly using one of the mounting options MB provides. However, the tweeter sits out to far to use the stock grills. Flipping the tweeter housing to recess it and using some low profile screws allows the stock grill to fit.

The JBL's are 2" deep and that is too much for the front doors. The doors are MAX 2" and taper to 1 3/4. I noticed the speakers had a plastic cover over the magnet that could be unscrewed (hidden screw) and peeled off, allowing just enough clearance.

Without altering the holes, I'll probably end up with the JBLs up front (MB Quart separates like the PCE210 might be better), the 6W0s in the 6.5 inch bolster holes - they almost certainly will not fit without extra trim rings and some sheet metal cutting. They may need some creative sealing of the cavity. Then a MB Quart PCE210 kit fitting the 4" and tweeter in the rear. PCE210 4" will require a ring for space. MB Quart provides these although they may not be thick enough. The external amp is staying.

Finally I'm fiddling with a center speaker. I do not see how Rick Carter mounted the 4" JBL in the center vent. A 3.5" will sit in the hole if you remove the grill. I suppose you could build a face and close the vent. An unenclosed speaker will sound horribly tinny.

Glack-
The Porsche labeled Becker CDR-220 models have a faceplate available which is viewable from any angle. The units which were fitted to a particular model (997?) as original equipment have a faceplate which is not visible when mounted in a 928 dash. Either a Becker dealer or SW Stereo can supply the updated faceplate on an exchange basis for ~$100 if I remember correctly. SW Stereo can also answer pretty much any question related to the Becker head units. 1-800-270-2378
I did a lot of research into the CDR-210/220 and related models before I updated to the 210 model. Let me know if I can be of more help.

Bill,
The center speaker is not mounted in the vent but above the vent in the dash.

Ah...you cut a hole in the dash. Ew..... Let me think about that.

Oh, I pulled the amp as a channel went out (sending back to get another) and gave the headunit another chance. Not so bad after all, but the speakers can tolerate more power.

Tried some amateur baffling by installing some dynamat inside the doors and sealing around the speakers with the foam tubing used to insulate hot water pipes. Pushed it in between the panels to create a chamber. It provided a good seal. But the speakers sounded worse (muffled). Baffling speakers depends on the speaker design. Will have to experiment with different volumes.

Well, here's what I've done to my '85 S2-

Stock speakers. I added a Pioneer DEH-6700p to the panel. This stereo controls an iPod via a Pioneer CDIB-100 bus. This bus [second picture] allows me to control the iPod via the head unit.

-I DONT recommend this system. It works perfectly- the iTunes/iPod/Pioneer system is well engineered, but the GLARING problem that exists with this is that it is difficult to access certain songs. You pick a genre, and after that it is alphabetical by name. So you might actually have Asia in the same playgroup as Dead Kennedy's or Fiorella Mannoia. Which means you have to click through dozens of songs to get to the ones you want...

Rather time consuming, and since you usually want to play particular songs when the significant other is aboard, it doesn't contribute to a positive image of the expensive toy.

Still, it works. I don't listen to radio at all any more, since the only good station in town [party931.com] stopped broadcasting beyond the internet.

I have the Alpine version of this. You can navigate by artist, album or song, just like on the iPod. The Pioneer only does it by genre? That sucks. I can pretty quickly get to a specific song, but I generally just put it on random.
