Xenon/HID lights
Does anyone have any experience with the lights that 928 Specialists is selling?
Maybe I should find out what my 93 GTS has for headlights. For all I know they might already be HID's.
I like a well lit roadway, they grow the deer bigger up here in Maine!

AFAIK, the Xenon HID lights were never offered on the 928 as a factory option. I could be wrong though. My '94 does not have them. I have fitted my '91 with the kit from 928 Specialists. I like them.
Note that a Xenon bulb-only upgrade will not be as good a factory-designed system. The OEM lens is designed for the OEM halogen bulb and therefore you do not get the perfect light distribution you might expect if you have become used to a factory-equipped xenon-lighted car. However, the upgrade is pretty darn good and a nice step-up from halogen.
Also, note that the simplest upgrade for the US-spec cars will result in no high-beams - as in the upgrade kit is not a dual-element bulb. But, IMO you don't need high-beams if you got xenons. However, you can get a bi-xenon kit. But, as Dave Roberts explained to me, to use it you would first need to retrofit to Euro-H4 wiring and then get the H4 xenon upgrade kit. If I upgrade one of my other Sharks I will likely go that route just for the exercise.

I have the 928 Spec. H5's on my car. all I can say is OMG! It's like daylight vs. moonlight. Took just under 2 hours to install and half of that time is wrestling with the damn fender liners. I think it's one of the better upgrades for our cars.
One note: on the H5's the highbeams become pretty much worthless. So just be prepared for that. If you have H4's (doubtful), you can get the bi-xenon kit for $100 more IIRC and have "instant daylight!"

H5 is stock. H4 never made it onto any US 928. I have H4 headlamps installed on my 89 and really like them with a bright bulb. They are more expensive to get than DR's HID kits, but the nice setup would be H4 with a DR kit. I'm tempted.

Dude - That is HOTT!!
Mark that top picture is one of the best straight on front shots i have ever seen of a 928. The OB style with aero mirrors is just awesome. Now i got to finish my CF mirrors.
Where did you get the colored fog/driving lights?

How would one go about getting H4 lights?
So, the HID kits do not have dual filament bulbs? Is that correct? So what happens when you install the HID bulbs in place of the originals, only one beam? I guess I'm not really understanding this very well. That's what I get for not having the time to research things right now, working too damn much.
I like having high beams. My audi has incredible high beams, that's what I'd like to have on my GTS.

Standard HIDs are just one light. Some move the bulb or do other tricks to act like low and high. You're better off spending your money on HID headlights and HID fog/driving lights than dual beam headlights.
If you want new H4s, 928 Specialists and 928 International have them for $250-ish each. I may have an extra set of used ones in a few days.

I'm sorry, I think I may have mis-spoken when I said the high beams are worthless. WHat I meant was that these lights are so superior that you won't even be able to tell your highbeams are on. They are that bright! But if you have H4's then you could get the bi-xenon and have real flame throwers! I guarantee if you get the Xenons for your H5's you will be VERY PLEASED. THey take a while to get used to because they are so bright, but after a few weeks you'll hate your other cars!

Greg,
If you want H4's you need to order a set of Bosch lenses from the big 3 - approx $250 a piece (x2) if you have H5's now you can probably sell them on ebay for ~half that if you are lucky - helps.
They just bolt in - no major drama - but you need to change out the connectors from H5 to H4 - ideally solder in a new connector (a few $ each) easy upgrade - lenses come with tungsten halogen bulbs. Even just H4's is a major lighting upgrade. See Dave's (SharkSkin) write up on H4's & see Ed Scherer's previous write up on his HID install - very nicely done & documented... (the 928 specialists kit).

The H4 + HID combo is wonderful. I think for the first time, I'm actually enjoying the dark drives home now that daylight savings time is over.

I also told Dave Roberts that I'd write up the installation procedure I used, so that's available now as a 20-page Acrobat (PDF) document. Seems kind of long, I know, but it includes tons of photos and details of some modifications I made.
