Xenon/HID lights

That's a tough offer to pass up....
>What color temperature rating are the bulbs in Mark Robinsons 928 (which I >believe he said are the 928SP kit bulbs)?
>>They are 6k, they look very white almost just like the 4k OEM setups. They >>only look a little blueish on startup (and in photographs)
So, who is the bulb maker, are they Philips, Osram, etc.?
I've had heard of numerous bad experiences with other no-name bulbs with 200hour lifespans, whereas the Philips 4300K's are rated at 2000 hours....
So here's another question. If they aren't Philips bulbs, can one be swapped into the H3 kit or are they special in any way?
Lastly, do you have a night-time picture of the HID driving lights only on a road?

After reading Ed's write-up, I have to say a huge "thank you"! As much as anything I have seen, it represents the incredible free resource centre that we call Rennlist. I think it is quite amazing that people give so much of their time and intelligence and experience to others, without expecting anything in return. To Ed, as to Tony and Theo and Greg, and all the others who have helped make the ownership of a 928 possible and fruitful, we salute you!

I checked as set this morning and I can't find a manufacturers name on them, sorry.

I think your experience was with the earlier generation of HIDs, they were very sensitive to shock failures and was why i stayed away from they until now. I ran the HIDs we sell in my Jeep Rubicon for 3 months on gravel roads, forest service roads, and off-roading before I would even consider selling them. As of yet we have had no failures of any type and the distributor even laughed at me when I wanted replacement bulb part numbers/prices so I could offer them on the website (which I did any way). These bulbs are also rated for at least 2000 hours..

If you have a soldering iron I guess anything is possible, but it seems silly to go thru all that effort when in reality most light bulbs are pratically made by only 1 or 2 manufacturers (sort of like TV Tubes, Plasma/LCD screens).
>Lastly, do you have a night-time picture of the HID driving lights only on a road?
I haven't been able to get a decent night photo with my digital that shows the real results. BTW, read paragraph above, again most HID bulb elements are the same, it is the reflector assembly that makes the biggest difference.. and the stock Driving Light reflectors on a 928 work dang well!

FWIW, I won a street race a few years back just by lowering my headlights & relying on my foglights. Since the car's looks so mysterious with just the fog lights on, I chose to HID-convert these in lieu of my H4's, which carry PIAA bulbs. I rarely drive in the blackness of night, but often at dusk.

Is there a lot of glare or is the beam pretty flat?

Is there some combination of readily available parts (kit?) that will allow me to convert my '86 to the later-style headlights that completely fill the bucket (no stupid chrome trim ring) *and* HID goodness?
For some reason I really dislike that chrome ring....

While I certainly appreciate being able to see where I'm going, that does seem a bit steep
What would that combination be, exactly, though (just for the information). I Can't seem to keep the whole H3,4,5, whatever thing straight. I don't even know what I have now!
