Default 928 vs Testarossa II

I was going to provide an update to my thread but it was moved/deleted into the abyss. I don't know what constitutes as 'allowable' on the forum but I'll post this anyway until punted once again.

I drove the previously mentioned 'red head' today. Road conditions were good with a temp of 7C, little traffic thorugh the city and out on the highway. The car starts from cold well and idles at below 1k rpm after a minute or so. Clutch had a good bite as did the tyres with no difficulties selecting any gear when cold or warm.

City driving is incomparable..............I don't live in the city so very rarely drive the 928 there.

Out on the highway the difference is night and day. Where the 928 sits at the speed limit in 3rd gear then @ WOT accelerates very powerfully the Testarossa would require another downshift to keep up. I toped the Fcar out at 265kph............it probably could have went faster but ran out of road. In the same stretch I believe the 928 would have reached a higher speed as the Ferrari has to be reved to max to go anywhere. Brakes were similar and the handling not as crisp as the 928.

Maintenance aside I still wouldn't own the Fcar despite the perceived prestige. Don't get me wrong I loved the sound and the twisted necks.

For a direct comparison I read the many links sent during my 1st thread (thx JP) and I drove my S4 very spiritedly yesterday.

For lots less money I'll now hunt for a good GT and upgrade as my S4 and more.

Now hurry up and read this before this also is sent to the twilight ??????

Malcolm:

It's not in the Abyss - it's in the General Porsche discussion forum. Probably because it was not 928 specific enough? Dunno.

Either way I'm glad to hear you prefer the 928 and will stay with us.

Nicole..............thanks but per my first post I was never leaving. The 'red head' was a possible addition to the stable.

Now I've reached the decision I'll buy my SO the 4X4 she wants (believe me we use them as designed in this country) and the GT I've promised myself.

I'll go look where I've been relegated to!

Malcolm
I also got the comparo from JP...good article, except for the head to head comparo with the GT & ZR1 showed more "wins" for the GT but it still "lost"? Odd huh...clearly a biased article for the then new ZR1

Brian............couldn't agree more.

The magazine had very obvious biases toward the 'Vette............they had to sell them some how!!!

Malcolm,

Im glas your staying with the P-car. I have alwasy liked F-cars my self but they are really over priced for what you get IMO. Oh yeah I see your from Southern Alberta where abouts I grew up in Lethbridge.

considering how well my 928 did against a ferrari challenge 360 race car, id have to say the 928 is king. especially, the fact that a challenge 360 costs about $125K and an S4 with a set of headers and all the safety equip, will run about $20 for a nice one! same weight, same hp, pretty close to the same performance. (especially, for most DE or street drivers!)

no subsitute!

I should footnote that the driver of the 360 ferrari was a top 10ish type driver in the challenge series. a top 360 challenge driver takes those cars almost to as fast as a GT3 cup car, but the point is, the 928 is pretty darn good for a car so old and so cheap (relatively speaking)

I have hidden somewhere an unflattering photo of a 6'6" guy shoehorned into an otherwise good looking black 328 --- with ~ 4" of forehead rising through the targa roof. His best skin tight Italian loafers were 5 sizes too large to avoid covering all the offset pedals with one blind stab .... if the legs could have been moved 'whilst' locked under the steering wheel. There is not enough Vasoline in the world to have made that a comfortable fit - let alone drive the thing safely:
I take it that the TR is more accomodating? Maybe I should try a full sized Ferrari TR .... and not a puny compact?

It is soooo nice to enjoy the perfect seating and control position in a no sunroof 928!

Garth ..............don't know about the height requirement, I'm a little shorter but not by much and the bulk makes up. The TR seating was OK but then again I have a sunroof in the 928 and would struggle to be in the cab with a helmet/fire suit etc on.

Perhaps a revised lower seat would accomodate any true track time in the P car should I choose..............that would be my new modified GT of course.

Heinrich..............glad you liked the report..........only my seat of the pants opinion though

why do these threads get moved? Makes no sense as they ARE 928 related, and damn interesting to boot! Anybody agree?

Kevin............perhaps the moderators can respond.

I would like to believe that as members we all have equal standing when submitting a thread that pertains to our 928s or subjects related thereto whether they be technical, meetings/gatherings or 'nice to know' stuff.

I believe this thread would have been of interest to all but the first part was 'moved'. At least I didn't get banned...........yet!

Am I honestly supposed to believe that a 185mph Testarossa is slower than an 88 s4 automatic? What was it running on 8 cylinders? I've seen tests where they do the quarter at over 110 mph and they still have an incredible top end.
