JMHO, but if I were to modify my street 928 (rear fender flares), I would personally prefer to use factory panels in order not to devalue the car farther, as most body kits do in the end. The exception here would be if I were to be doing this mod on a track car.

Factory looking GTS Rear with factory panels!

$1250 (2 ea. rear quarter panels)
$200 (1 ea. Gas door)
$150 (Misc. items)
$1000 (Labor)
$250 (paint & material)

P.S. Anyone in Texas that wants to do this, send me a PM. I know a body shop that can do it with a finish quality that is as good or better than factory!

My Brother just got done welding two used 1/4s back into his 84. The guy that had it before him decided it would be cool to cut the area over the wheels out and "stretch" the metal. They were then tack welded in place and the joints were glassed over. To say it was a hack job is being generous. Not only did it look stupid, it was poorly done. He cut them up into the door jams and roof panel and around the 1/4 windows. At some point, you have to make a call on where to join the panels in. If the welds are good, then all is okay. I'm surprised nobody has come up with a set of dies to make a steel weld in panel to reproduce the GTS look. They did it for the 914-6, why not the 928? Then you can cut the old section out and weld the new in. This is how the early 911 turbos were done at Porsche.

New 1/4s are really expensive. I'd go with a street racing tire before I cut up the body....assuming the goal is wider tires and not "the look". I must say though, the GTS flares are really nice looking....but the older 928 has a classic, clean look to it that I like as well. I'm not a big fan of sheet metal revisions on a car like the 928. But these glass units do look nice.

So GTS rear quarters are still available? How expensive are they? Anyone have any pictures of GTS rear quarters with flares on a pre S4?

When I made the wider rear quarter panels for my car, I checked into having them made from metal. I thought the cost was too high. If I remember correctly, it was $2700 - $2800 for the first set and $2600 for more. I'd have to add some extra cost on to that for the time to work with the fab shop, and for handling. It didn't seem like an economical thing to do. Also, to weld them on with the joint right under the quarter window would mean removing the fuel tank and the vent/expansion tank plus dealing with removing the undercoating and properly rust proofing the entire seam afterward. The newer adhesives work quite well to join composite to metal. That's why I decided to go with composite for the panels. I'm pleased with the result and they are actually stronger than the original. Your point about not deviating from the stock look is important if overall value retention is high on your priority. I tried to not stray too far from the GTS look though and I think if a person wasn't sure what a GTS really looked like, they might not know the difference. They are about 1.4" wider.

I should get the car back from the paint shop this weekend. It'll be another week or so until I get the bumper covers, mirrors, and other small parts back. Soon as everything is assembled, I'll have completed pics. Other than that, all I can say is that it looks very nice, but that's my very biased opinion. Some guys almost have a spontaneous orgasm when they see it.

My son & I are installing GTS quarters on my 86.5 right now. The quarters cost me (the insurance company actually) $1100.00 each. I have progress pics if you would like them but no additional flares.
