Default Transmission strength

I have been following the Limited slip discussion. Is there any difference in stregnth between the 1978 - 1982 transmissions and the 1983 - 1984? Or is the difference mainly the different final drive ratios? My 81 euro S has an open diff while I have an 84 transmission thats noisy but has the LSD. Wondering if it makes sense to fix the 84 if its stronger as opposed to finding a LSD for the early gearbox.

84 may be 2.2. 81 should be 2.75.

84 could be Borge Warner synchros (IIRC) 81 is Porsche synchros, thought to be weaker, though it is an older design, with more use, and they are cheaper to rebuild.

'84 is still with old style syncros, if it's really from '84 model year car.

It should be possible to fit '84 LSD to older box. At least with some fairly easily doable modifications.

There are not that many differencees between those years. '82 reverse gear lock was added, differential small gears got stronger shaft and LSD friction plate design changed. LSD plates were changed again at April 1st '82. '83 changed only gearing. Some other internal parts were changed also during those years but they are not very significant other than when mixing parts from different model year boxes.

It sounds like I should have jumped at the early LSD.

I was told, FB, that the changes would be quite extensive.

Brendan, I love that well there you go and there you are. Kind of reminds me of Spanky and the Gang. Thanks for the info. It looks like it makes the most sense to try and find another earloy LSD/

If I find out the the Trans I bought from ebay HAS LSD, and I don't need this one I will contact you. Deal? Although I have no idea what the changes would be for fitting to a post 83. 5 spd. IU've learned recently the work sometimes isn't worth the money saved.

I may be working out a trade of my 84 LSD for an earlier one . I'll let you know what happens.
