Default Front Clear Side Marker Lens Install

For anyone who is interested in performing this change over, I did a complete procedure on the SOCAL board.

Clear Front Side Marker Install

Thanks to Mark A and Sterling for general direction in how to get it done and special thanks to Heinrich for giving up his claimed pair which were waiting for him at 928 Int'l. He did this so I could show the results at Sharktoberfest. What a guy!

Nice! What about the turn indicator? Was it easy enough to find an amber bulb for that?

Are you referring here to the turn signal lenses, or the side markers? Instead of metallizing, you can just use hi-temp silver paint. The BMW guys use that for 'chromelining' the headlight surrounds.

I am referring to both. When you put a clear lens on the turn signal, you see that it has been plastic chromed (metallized) The inside of the side markers are not. You can see what they look like in the procedure I wrote. I tried those ridiculous "Chrome" paints which are nothing more than an aluminum look. This is why I had sent my "928 GTS" insignia out to get plastic chromed.

Being that the side marker and the turn signal are so close, as well as the head lights and fog/driving lights, you can see they are all similiar to each other with a chrome reflective back ground. This make for the side marker looking a bit "off". I believe I have seen the reflective backing on the side markers of newer cars. I think it would tie it all in rather well.

As a matter of fact, I think I will sell these after Sharktoberfest and start over, to do what I am talking about. Some one will get a good deal on pre assembled front side markers. (...hmmmm, now lets see... R&D, labor and materials, [*ching ka'ching *ka'ching ching....] hmmmm $300!?!?, no, that can't be right!)

LOL...no no, sorry bud...wasn't directed at you. I just get a bit miffed when the manufacturer of a product says their product can do something that it doesn't even closely resemble. I went through 3 different cans of Chrome paint and it was laughable to think it looked something like chrome....guess they suckered me to believe it!

As for the rice-o roni's, not sure if I would want to emulate anything those guys are doing. I do have a SOCAL 928 sticker on the car though...uh oh

As for chrome, try a hobbystore. They sell strips of adhesive stuff that you can line the housing with.Youll find it near the model airplane coverings...its made by "MONOCOTE" i believe...this stuff is peel and stick, you dont need a hot monocote iron. Im sure it wouldlook better and be more relfective than the paint. I have it on my door sill under "928"

Armed with a sharp exacto you could cut it to fit nicely i bet.

I was thinking (dagerous thing, I know) how these would look on a darker color or red car? With the white backing, It'll show white. If you were to paint the white portion, body color (red in my case) would it destroy the overall look? Would it blend in better? Would it look like crap? Just thinking ahead as mine are on order.

Keith:

I have a huge roll of foil tape that looks like chrome and is almost 2" wide. It's called Tycol Adhesives Nashua Tape Products 322 Foil Tape. It's a 50 yard roll. I'll bring it down and you can have as much as you want. If it can conform to the shape, it should do the job. Plus, it's readily reversible if it turns out you don't like the look.

WOW! Keiths write up is great! The detailed descriptions are very helpfull. I also have a white 28 so this will be very helpfull when I order my lenses. This sort of guide would be a great addition in a 928 techie forum kinda thingy. Good job Keith... how much for those lenses again!?
