As was discussed in a previous thread, my car was in a front-end accident and will need some paint and bodywork. A check should be on its way soon to cover the repair estimate.

I'd like to pay up the difference and get the whole car painted. It was in nice shape, but it wasn't perfect and I'd rather know that the whole car matches itself. With red paint, its bound to start fading eventually, but its will take far longer to be noticable if the panels all match.

In addition to the basic repaint, I want to delete the headlamp washers. In four years of daily driving a 928, I've never needed to use them once, and they clutter up the bumper. Pain to wax around, too. I'm also considering having the front spoiler mounting holes in the fenders filled in. That spoiler is so low, I can barely get into my own driveway with one.

Anything other ideas of things to change while we're at it? I mostly like the stock appearance of the car, but there are little things that can be improved. It does need to stay street-legal. Its already side-molding free

Fill in the rub strip holes if you have them.

Roll the rear fenders if you feel like it. I showed it on here in a thread several months ago. It worked out real well.

Maybe fill in the rear holes for the S spoiler, as you can just do an S4 spoiler. And if you remove the front spoiler, you won't want the rear on there anyway.

I went through a similiar situation a few years back with my 82. This was actually a great opportunity to get a few things done to "blend" the car a bit better and lose the look of the black pieces which look like an after thought ...JMHO

You can see the color keying that I did around the car. When this stuff is off, it really doesn't cost anymore to shoot it with body color while the rest of the car is being done. Hard to see, but the 3 grill slats are the color of the car as well. You can even do your wheels if you want.. Take a look and see if it is for you. Good Luck Jessa!

Oh yea...just to add, get new bumper beading, washer nozzles for the hood, all new lenses if needed around the car. This will make a BIG difference in the "new" look of the car. I have seen repaints when this stuff is not changed out and it looks terrible.

i totally removed the bumper pads at the back and filled in the moderaly sized holes with rubber bumper repair.

Somebody - I think it was Dave Roberts - once said you should budget about $1k for rubber and trim pieces that you want or need to replace when doing a full repaint. That might not be enough nowadays, but you should do it anyway.

I'd consider removing the side markers. But I would consider reinstalling an S spoiler with the proper brake ducting and add Carl Fausett's latest invention for protecthion. I like the idea of having the rear bumper pads in body color, and would consider upgrading to the larger headlights without the chrome ring.

Do you have GTS mirrors (I forget). Those are a great update to make, too!

Then, instead of getting new orange turn signal lenses, you could get clear ones - either the inexpensive ones from Canada, or the European ones in OEM quality.

My paint guy did a nice job on the '82 Weissach, repainting two quarters and numerous touch up areas. It came out great for $1K. That was a metallic gold/champagne color with clear coat.
I'm just saying a partial repaint may work out nice.
p.s. I'd fix the driveway entrance and keep the front S spoiler.

I am just going through a repaint on my '87 S4. So here is the Lowdown: Mine is L700 Jet Black and back then it was s basecoat (aka no clear coat). I took it to the dealership and they said it was better to go with the base/clear coat since it provides better UV protection, easier to fix, etc. Knowing that since model year 1990 i think onward, Porsche started using clearcoat (all GTS has them), i said ok. They used Glasruit (which is one of the top line materials). The paintjob itself is $6100 (just paint and labor). I brought all the components (all the rubbed, seals etc... parts WILL set you back $2k to do it right.. i mean each door seal is $375 from Porsche...so imagine). I replaced the following:

Door Seals
Window Seals
Hatch Seal
All rubber (beading, side lenses, blah blah blah... i can email you the list)
Water sprinklers
wiper caps.... you can imagine

Reconditionned: rear spoiler mirror rubber
Repainted all the black trim around windows, front and rear glasses

Underfull glass coverage, I got brand new front windshield (mine had a lot of rock chips from a mishap...), new front lights and fog lenses (cracked)...

The car went to the dealer for 2 months (i will pick it up Inshalla (God Willing) this friday when i come back to the US). I had to go to them MANY times to help them do simple stuff like remove the sunroof, etc.... They had the Chilton's manuals (not factory), but even the factory pretty much sucks when it comes to body...

Anyways, if you want to do it, do it right: Glass out, remove everything you can off the car, and I MEAN EVERYTHING. Replace all the rubber and plastic trim. My next 928 (GT) for paint... i will do the work at home and just send it in for paint and reassemble it at home (saves time and $$$). If you want to get a good painjob, I would highly recommend Scottsdale Paint and Body (they are part of the dealer and they do great jobs). Ask for Wade Bladehorn who is the Porsche guy there (4809418800). He is a great guy and took a lot of my nuisance and pickiness and me showing up almost every couple of days to see my baby!!!. If you need parts, let me know, i have a good relationship with the local dealership and i get 20-30% off on parts (depending which one it is) and they are really good at getting my stuff even if it means getting them from Germany!

If you have questions feel free to ask as I know more 928 now that ever before (every day is a new thing to learn with those little buggers)

In Kalifornia, $6100 for a complete tear down, strip, repaint and reassemble is considered a "really good deal"...

I have an estimate from a good local (San Jose) P car shop to paint my '86.5 with everything off the car and new seals and rubber: $10,000 & two months in the shop. Figure that what can be found when everything comes apart and what you will dream up while it is coming apart, will add more to that. I know I could get a better price but I am not sure I will get as good a job, and I don't want to have to get out my shotgun to make certain it gets done right. Then after it is all finished I have to watch out for about three years and avoid Peterbilts that might smash it all up again, because the paint will put me so upside down when considering replacement value it would probably be totaled or close to it. Of course if someone else were to hit.........oh, ignore that I started to think that way.

Yeah paint job $$ are all over the place but I don't think Khaled 6,100 is out of whack, you can save a bundle by stripping the car down and re-assembling yourself. If I did it again I would prep (i.e. remove old paint) the bumpers myself .. that was a substantial part of my bill. 4 layers of old paint on the rear bumper didn't help.

New seals etc .. really add up, shop around but little upgrades such as GTS windshield stuff only makes it worse. Evidently all Porshce's have expensive seals, its not just the 928. Removing the black trim by he door windows means you will break the $40 corner pieces.

Interesting to see the number of people repainting, going to be a lot of nice looking 928's around in a few years at this rate !!
