This door handle hinge issue has been coming up a lot lately. The thread "Broken door handle hinge replacement: nasty!!" was one of the more recent ones.

An extra set of inverse knuckles and joints are necessary to work on a 928 for sure. The only alternative is to follow good procedures.

As an example I once installed an engine ... and once she was nicely in-place I realised I had forgotten ......

I moved the window up and down multiple times to make clearance at various times.

Yoda says: PITA it is, door handle leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Etc.

I had an issue at SITM this year that might provide some help. The platic rivet thingy on the end of the widow lifting arm that goes into the track at the bottom of the galss broke and the glass went shooting down to the bottom of the door. I'll tell you, that glass goes WAY down there. I'll bet you could loosen the 4 window motor bolts and get the galss to drop another 2-3 inches. Might save you a lot of time in the long run. Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!! ITS DONE AND IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!! Putting the window down provided another challenge, since it wouldn't move!!! After some "encouragement" of manually turning the window motor armature the window slowly went down! That provided plenty of room to work! After putting a couple actuating arms on backwards (translated...the hard as hell way) it is done..here are some pics that should help anyone with a vacuum locked 928..note the security plate is off for all the pictures! Last pic shows just a touch of dirty hand grease on the door! Total time was about 4 hours...but it will be much faster next time, since I wasted quite a bit of time doing things the hard way!

Ah, yes, the grease spots on the door... I remember them...

Grease spots lead to anger. Anger leads to hatred...

That is a battle scar from a PO less than ideal repaint!!! Oddly enough paint doesn't stick very well to rubber!

figures this would be the one that gets me.... electrical issues? ha! easy stuff... stroker? no problem. brakes? easy. suspension? any time... door handle - you gotta be friggin kidding me - is this a chinese puzzle??? rubics cubes are easier... this is a rite of passage alright - to the loony bin for ham handed klutzes!!

anyhoo - looks like georges link is down... anyone got a bad memory on how to do this??? I"ve got lots of loose parts - but nothing comes out - somethings hanging it all up.... do I need to pull the outer key lock assy 1st??? judging by the grease around brian's - I'm sure it's gotta go... any particular sequence to pulling this apart w/out destroying more stuff??

ps - I think I know the cause: I tightened my door post adjustment so the door fits tighter to cure a high speed wind noise... but it opens harder now, apparently a bit too hard... dang stroker slippery slope - even affected my door handles, ha!

thx!

Rob:

George's Web material got moved to a different server. In any of his URL links that you may have replace "sis125" with "sis24".

So, the door handle repair is now at:

http://sis24.berkeley.edu/928/wk-door-handle.html

And George's 928 homepage is:
