Actually I modified my last one by making the parts that break out of steel and tack welding them on the rod.
No more broken handles. It was very tedious though and took way too much time.

As I understand it, the part is made out of low quality pot metal [probably by some exec's BIL ;-)]. Here's an oppotunity for one of the "Big 3" to take over a market segment. I'd pay 2 or 3 times the Porsche price for a part that would last that much longer. I hate doing stupid, low-tech jobs over and over again.

after re-adjusting everything it all seems pretty stress-free... but a lot can happen in another 20 yrs...
does raise an interesting point - if one lubes the whole assy by unscrewing the plastic lock plunger cap and spraying lube w/a tube once in a whle, it seems that the whole thing may last longer by working easier.... could be a good annual maint item, kinda like the electrical maint...
