Yes but the engine leaks and the trans is almost gone ... Far too often the $2,000-5,000 928 is but a couple of "issues" away from being a $700 car.

Beat me to it. Nothing personal factorx but all these beaters should be put out to pasture. They just give the 928 in general a bad name and justify the low price overall. I have seen some neglected ones around my area and as others have remarked here it is just a sad sight to see.

They should be parted out and taken out of circulation.

Send a PM to rennlist member "G Man" - he has a nice 81 model for sale. As far as I know it has relatively low mileage.

Jim is a regular here, took good care of the car and had it repainted some time ago. I think it's within the price range and has plenty of life left.

Jim recently bought an 84S.

I disagree that revivable 928s should be put out to pasture to preserve the market value, but that opposite happens. A 928 cost far, far more than a Vette, and they are not put out to pasture. It is the increasing throw-away prices of old 928s that hurts the value. Why pay $30,000 for a GTS when in a few years or as it ages becomes just salvage yard junk?

DFWX i don't quite understand your point. But seeing beat up, delapidated 928's for sale do nothing for the image. There are very few people who can rehab a lousy shark.

Muscle cars from the 60's have gone up in price because there are very few left, and those are well cared for.

You looking for anything in particular? 5spd or auto? Color? Year preferences?

I don't know if I should be insulted or not. My 81' that I am selling is up for less than $5000, and it is definantly not close to being a $700 car.

Gee...I can't believe anyone would be worried about image!!!!!! I didn't write the rules, but I think if you're worried about image, you should be in a different forum.

The car is virtually extinct as it is. I don't object to parting out cars, but I wouldn't want to kill as many of them as possible in order to make my car more rare. Kinda "maccabe" of a principle, actually.

Take the down to earth owners out of 928 ownership and you MAY get higher values...BUT at an image cost you and your eccentric friends may not be able to afford for long

This goes back to the todays competition thread tarek where you had the same thoughts, however for someone with so many eccentric plastic bits stuck on your sharks perhaps you are the one concerned with image.

I just don't like the best car of the 80's turned into a "fat and Lazy" object of criticism by the less knowlegable of sports car owners and neglected exampls feed that.

You must've gotten me wrong tv. In the other thread, I was referring to the construction quality of the rice cars, and particularly referring to those older rice cars that are ignored and barely held together on a small budget, yet still kicking my *** in the 928

We must have different definitions of eccentricity. I should've assumed a possibility of that. My bad. But for clarification, the plastic bits on my sharks illustrate my will to deviate from the norm/convention/bone-stock-is-the-only-thing-that-matters, knowing well that it makes the cars less desirable and less valuable to the traditional Porsche enthusiast....and more so to the 928 community. That also means I care very little about image...in this forum at least. Ask people who know me. I'm the goofball who loves his 928 just because, and not because it projects an image. Hence I used one as a truck for years...moved my house with it...pulled trailers, etc.

I would agree that the best car of the 80's (and of all time for you and me) need be upheld to that status, and that neglected examples don't do you and me any justice, because people would have even more difficulty understanding our passion for it. Yet one cannot ignore the fact that the 928 is itself a trap to those who love it. They buy the dream car for a small penny and by the time maintenance and repair costs creep up, it's almost too late for them to do anything about it. I don't think these people ignore their 928 on purpose...I give them a lot of credit for deciding to own one, and even more so, to keep it for some time....Interestingly, these are the people who make it affordable to some of us to buy a fixer upper and rebuild from there... Point is, these people are the victim of a false promise of a supercar that became quickly unaffordable to keep up with. Believe me, they would love to own a concours winning 928 instead

Default Dollars are not the reason... It is a hobby and will never make economic sense...

It will only make sense when you put the foot to the floor...

It is hard to justify restoring any 928 $$$$ Dollars wise that is

You just have to want to do it and spend some time putting a little blood sweat and tears in... imbue some of your own heart and soul. I have enjoyed learning about the cars. I know quite a bit now about how it is all put together. I always wanted a 928 and now a childhood dream is realized. I bought a house witha garage and then got a car to work on.

But even a S4 era car is can be not worth restoring as far as $$$ is concerned.

I hope more people decide to restore 928s... it is a shame to see beat up ones... mine was a kind basket case and if you want to put a $$$ figure on how much it was worth as a resto project... I would say about

-$10,000

put $15000 into it and it is worth $5000

hehehehe

i respect this car for what it is not the image that it's upholding, regaurdless of it's current market value or the fact that it took the best sports car award when it initially was born into the market, or even the fact that they're decaying in someones barn right now and that person doesn't even realize what kind of car that is...

The porsche that i sold had over $4000 worth of work put into it and hours and hours of my own blood and sweat... as well as those mornings during the winter when, because my MAF sucked, would not hardly start on the first turn of the key and especially those mornings that the clutch pedal sunk all the way to the floor and i spent a quick 1 5 minutes before work quick bleeding it just to arrive on time...

I love this car for what it is and i respect its power, performance, engineering, and of course that all important branding that says "Porsche"

as far as justification to put $15000 in to your car and increasing its value to 5,000... i could care less what i increased it's price by because in my eyes i'm restoring a priceless classic

thank you
-- Robert
