Where do you mount your fire extinguisher in your pristine 928? Pics maybe? What kind do you have? Is halon worth the price?

The $25 ABC bottles that are available everywhere have a major ingredient called "nuisance dust"! It is an unbelieveable mess if you have to use it in your interior! (I had a fire about 1.5 years ago - electrical panel)

If you're not racing - not really necessary to mount it - I keep mine in the floorboard behind the drivers seat. EASY to reach. You don't have to fumble with any release latches.

I have a Halon fire extinguisher mounted to the driver's seat with a custom bracket. In this location it's always readily available and it's never in the way of my legs or feet. And yes it's worth the extra expense for halon. Had an engine fire on my 89. Clean up was limited to the melted hood foam. The dry chemical type gets everywhere and is corrosive to electrical stuff.

I have a custom bracket - It's a combination of the Stable Energies seat mount, with the SafeCraft quick-release clamp. The SE mount positioned the ext high enough that the clamps would sometimes dig into the passenger's calfs(calves?) so I had my brother the machinist make up an adapter plate that positions the SafeCraft mount about 1" lower than it would be if it were simply mounted to the top of the Stable Energies bracket. The last two pics are sort of a before & after, showing the difference in mounting height. It's only about 1/2" lower than with the original bracket, but combined with the smooth clamps it makes a huge difference to my revlimiter. Also, using this mount I was able to rotate the extinguisher so that the handle is out of the way.

Not shown -- I was a bit worried about stuff getting into the upward-pointing nozzle. I found that a plastic film can cap was the right diameter to cover the nozzle opening, and it is held on by a piece of bicycle innertube. Keeps junk out of the nozzle, and pops off instantly under pressure(tested separately from extinguisher).

What is the need for the extinguisher?

To meet DE code (since rescinded in this region) I mounted the extinguisher just below the rear seat. There's a tie-down bracket there. Remove one screw, pull the bracket up and mount the extinguisher there. No new holes. No bracket purchased.

We have all of the CAD drawings and could make another. It holds a 2.5lb Amerex Halotron extinguisher, though it should work with any Amerex 2.5 pound unit. I'm not a site sponsor so PM or email might be a better venue to discuss further. You'll have to fork over some clams though -- the original extinguisher with seat bracket was about $180 shipped. The bracket was the FEM1 listed here. Currently the description does not mention 928, but I just called and confirmed that that's what I have(the confirmation email does not state part #). Then I picked up the Safecraft Billet quick-release mount, listed here. There was no cost attached to making the adapter plate and standoffs, since my brother owes me for a bunch of different reasons.

If you're still interested after all that, I can ask him for a price. Please note though, that if you have power seats you may need a different adapter plate. As you may have noticed, sometimes when I want something a certain way I focus so much on the finished result that I lose sight of the $ and/or time involved.

How did you get such a "good" pic of a 928 on fire?! And whose is/was it?!

That mount is totally trick!!! Would it work on a power seat S4? If it does, I want one!! Now I just keep it loose behind the drivers seat which is not exactly ideal....think "missle" if the car rolls! But its worth the risk to have one!

Do any of the big 3.5 make a good seat front mount? I really like it better than the standard armrest mount!

Where there's a will, there's a way. I imagine you could do what I did -- source the parts, then start measuring, head-scratching, cutting and drilling. I linked parts sources in post #8 above. Since it sounds like you would be starting with the FEM2 mount, you would probably need a different adapter plate than what I have.

For those who don't want to mount a full-sized extinguisher there are these:

Small enough to fit in the door pocket or under-dash tray and cheap enough to buy several so you always have 1 or 2 close at hand. Sure they're not a subsitute for a full-size unit but it's much better than nothing.

Also, if you're worried about a car fire, then maybe you should just stay home. Or stop with the "innovative" mods. You're much more likely to have some idiot total your car on the road then have a fire. Very likely that it'll be the 928 driver!
