Here's a good look at the cargo space of the 928S:



As you can see, you could carry enough arms and munitions to supply an infantry squad for a hard day of combat(the rear seats do fold forward also).

Kinda helps when you have the interior stripped to the bone, no back seats, etc...

 

As a former 944 owner, I will add that the 928 seems a tad more tight in the headroom department.

As for the rear area, I'd say the 944 has more room.....remember, the hatch glass is rounded on the 944 and it is flat on the 928. Seems to be more height in the 944 rear.

 

I agree with 944S Boyeee. The 944 hatch area is much more "usable" than the 928, b/c the 928's hatch is soooooo sloped. The 944 seems to hold more volume, because it's less wedge shaped. I was a lot more comfortable loading the 944 up at Home Depot and I am the 928.

 

At 6'6" and 36" inseam, I'm a tight fit in sunroof equipped 928s - although legroom is fine. For excellent headroom, my cars do not have the sunroof option.
Unless you have a very long torso, the more available sunroof cars should be fine.

 

I drove a 944 before I drove and bought a 928. Funny thing is after I drove the shark, I couldn't remember ANYTHING about the 944. Oh yeah, I think it may have needed motor mounts. Just Kidding.

 

Road and Track had an article in the 80's comparing a Ferrari, the 944, the Corvette, and the 928. In the article they mention that the 928, with the rear seats folded down, has 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

For a mountain bike with the front wheel off, it's probably far more ideal than the 944, by about something like 4-6 cubic feet. If you're moving furniture or boxes or you actually need your 20.3 cubic feet in a cube shape, it's probably the wrong car anyway.

On the other hand, I've been fool enough to ride in the back seat of a 944. Maybe that should discount my opinion right off the bat.

 

944 has more headroom and sunroof helps in this regard. 944 has side pockets in rear that give it the edge in usable trunk space. Bicycle sans front wheel fits into both. Whole lawnmower fits into 928, but not into 944 (handle folded forward).

I think the 944 is a more usable grocery getter, the rear area is less shallow but not nearly as large front-back. This is because of the 928's low roof interior as a result of the internal sunroof mechanism.

The 928's rear seats cannot be beaten in any Porsche except the Cayenne. Much more like adult seats as opposed to the toy seats in 944 and 911. Front legroom is the same story.

 

Have to second that, although I feel the 928 seats are more comfortable than the Cayenne's by a fair margin.

 

I own both. My 85' 944 has more passenger and luggage room than my 87' 928. I had no problem putting a bike in the back of my 944 either but I wouldn't even want try on a 928. I think on the later 944 the rear luggage compartment may be shallower than the earlier models.

 

Dont get one with a sunroof, big difference without one.

LOL, that pic was actually from a weekend trip to my uncles 30acre property in the Pocono Mtns. As you can see, i know how to pack only the essentials!

 

There might be more numerical space in the 928 hatch area, but the 944 holds more. I'm not sure the 928 hatch will close with a 27" tv in the back.

 

I own both and find that the 944/951 has a lot more headroom. I haven't measured the rear hatch, but agree with others that I don't sweat putting things in the back of a 944/951, but think twice about it in the 928. Go figure... lol
