Default There's GOTTA be a cheaper solution.... rattley windows

My windows rattle when they're down. A lot. Thunk, clunk, clunk. It makes me mad.

There are these felt window guides in there. Mine are 20 years old. They are not soft and pliant. I need soft and pliant window guides to make the clunk go away.

You need 2 sets of felt guides per door.

That's a total of 4.

THEY ARE $37.00 APIECE!

That's a real kick in the gazoozie. Is there a way to replace these without spending the price of dinner for 2 at a five star restaurant?

Has anybody come up with a way to fix the old ones?

cheers

Thaddeus

I've heard of some who've recovered the existing felt pads with new material, felt, presumably, glued right on top. I've not done it myself, so I cannot vouch for the method.

Do a search of this forum for 'moleskin' and all will be revealed.

Thadeus: Your rattle might be worn out plastic window guides - the ones that guide the glass up and down the metal rail in the door. That's what it was on the drivers side of my car (which has a lot less years/miles on it than yours. It's a nice restauration project, and I highly recommend to do the lower window seal at the same time.

Nicole is right (of course). The guides have more to do with the window rattle when lowered. Dan Brindle has a guide to replacing them. They aren't real inexpensive either. You can try to shim them, as he describes. I replaced mine, but the windows still are completely rattle-free. Here is Dan's great guide.

Thaddeus -

When you get around to doing it, let me know. I'll order the parts too and we can set aside some weekend to swear at our cars together. I did the moleskin trick, but it doesn't solve the rattle when the windows are down. It's definitely a guide issue.

A common cause is the $6 roller at the end of the regulating arm. Roll your window down half way and see if you can rock it fore and aft. if so you probably need a new roller.

Is it simple to change out, Mark?

Unfortunately no. You need to remove the regulator from the car and press the pin out that the roller rides on.

Spendy? I just re-did the window seals on the driver's side. yikes! But what a difference!

I'll have to save up to do the passenger side.
