That's a reasonable price. It's tempting. Some time in the future.

Or Color offsetting. Something to bring out some flair. My 78 has a silver spider, and a silver base under transparent blue/violet on the belt covers and SC.

As someone who spent the $$$$'s for the "stage 2" Murf kit, this is a good value. We can complain that "it should be cheaper", but we have already lost one supercharger kit producer this year who complained of losing money on each kit. To get a bolt on kit which can easily be done in an afternoon and run very well, customer support second to none, and provide a huge grin every time you turn the key is worth every penny I spent.

On a side note, Doug928's stage 1 SC'd S4 is a blast. 400+ rwhp in one afternoon

Tim and Carl

m21-sniper:
Assuming a 288hp US model getting to 407hp(a 119 hp net gain for $5300) with this set up you're talking $44.50 per HP.
Not to argue, but just to show where I got my numbers. In your quote above, you are comparing crank HP before SC of 288 to 407 at the rear wheels after the SC. Also, the car in the dyno chart is a 1988 US model, Automatic. That changes things a tad too.

Lets do the math right now: crank-HP-before Supercharging (316) to crank-after-supercharging (480*) , the gain is 164 HP, divided into the cost of $5,300; that's where I got my number. I said "36.00 per HP" but when I do it now it comes out to $32.31 per HP.

Let me put it this way: you will not be disappointed. When you look at the quality of the parts, the completeness of the kit, thoroughness of the instructions, ease of installation, and the end result: streetable, quiet, shove-you-in-your-seat-and-keep-you-there power, you will be very pleased.

* I used a 18% multiplier to go from RWHP to Crank HP. Others like to use 20% for automatic trans loss. At 20%, the crank HP is 488, and the cost is $30.81 per HP

I just want to add that having seen Carl's install manuals, although not for this specific product, they are probably the best I've ever seen for ANY product.

Carl:
I did this calculation above in my earlier post. To get $36.00 per HP, take the 316CHP and take out the 18% loss = 260RWHP. Which gives a net increase of 147RWHP; divide into $5,300 = $36/RWHP.

If I were I marketer, I'd use your approach of increasing the 407RWHP to the theoretical crank HP number which yields a lower cost per Crank Horse Power. But as a consumer, I'll choose my method. Both are valid measures. If only I could find the right car.... Damn! This is driving me crazy!

ANYONE HAVE A 5-SPD '87 OR LATER IN VERY GOOD SHAPE (WITH LSD) THEY WANT OT SELL?

If anyone thinks the price is too high, just build one. It's not that hard. This is a basic setup, anyone with some will power and welding knowlege can make one. The "home made" kit will not be as refined as Carl's, but for $1000 it's worth the try.

Took me a better part of 4 weekends to build it, and probalby just as much to fine tume it. Just finished all the shake down testing 2 days ago. Attached is a picture of my version of a basic SC setup. Please keep in mind, my AC never worked and had no intenstions of fixing it. The Paxton SC is sitting where the AC compressor and air pump used to be. Total cost including the price for a used SC unit was under $1000. The engine runs well under boost (just on the limit of rich). The factory 24lb injectors must help alot. I have an A/F and boost gage in the place of the ash tray and a Vortech FMU to manage fuel under boost. 2 bypass valves running as blow-off-valves (one ZX300TT and another from a Turbo Probe GT). The crank pulley for the SC is from a V8 Crown Victoria and welded to the original crank pulley. The bracket and tensioner is completly custom made by me. I still have the aftermarket chip set in. My guess is arond 400rwhp or maybe just a little less.

Instead of whining and coplaining, anyone that thinks otherwise should do what I did and make one.

I think Carl's price is resonable if you include how much effort and $$$ took to make this kit perfect.

Seriously, if I want to get my 2002 Audi S4 anwhere near 400whp it will cost me at least 7 grand in parts and that's before I get to suspension and the brake upgrade that will be needed. Also the entire front of the car has to come off and the engine out to get at the turbos. That stock clutch ain't gonna hold up either.....etc.

Gretch hit it on the head. It's cheap, just may not be affordable to you. Save up your pennies cause this is a bargain to say nothing of the time it takes to install.

If I did this, it would be a F'ing disaster.

Fair nuff Carl. I did calculate going by SAE net, not RWHP, so i get to be the dummy.

Nitrous is cheap. No turbo or SC kit is what i'd call 'cheap'.

This kit is however reasonable.

I for one would love one of these. Myself being an idiot, I could never install one. Do you make house calls, Carl?

Any plans to produce the kit minus the supercharger itself? (for export purposes) I could easily source a vortech in the UK putting the kit more within reach as I wouldn't be getting stung with import duties.

Great job( even though I have a 16v). Congrats.
Anyway, what happened to stage 3 SC you had like 5 months ago. It seemed the only SC at the time which could get 16v cars to go over 450hp. I was saving money for that

Klim
P.S. If you like Walmart prices, you will probably like Chinise made products

Thumbs up

Carl (and Tim),
Good work guys! All this talk about HP/$ is nothing but "mental masturbation". Some people "know the price of everything, but the value of nothing". The only feasible option to make those kinds of HP gains is building a stroker. If you don't like the price of this SC kit, you sure won't like the stroker bill. Not to mention the added time and complexity. Down the road turbos may become available as a DIY kit, but I doubt for less money. NOS? Its available and cheap. Anybody doing 150 or 200 shots? I'd be interested to hear how well that works.
