Default Pony Express 130 results (quick note)

Here's a qucik note about the Pony Express. All 3 928s did well
again.

Tammy and Paul finished 3rd in 115 class with a 114.189 mph average.
Not bad for Tammy first event as driver.

Tim and Cheryl finished 3rd in 140 class with a 139.961 mph average.
They were only off by .910 seconds. 140 was a tough class this time
with the winners (tie) both finishing with a 139.998 mph average.

Tim (my navigator) and I finished 1st in the 160 class with a 159.055
mph average. There were 5 cars signed up in the class, but Roland
dropped down to the 150 class, and 2 cars didn't finish. So just
finishing was half the battle. I was worried that I wouldn't make
it, but managed to reach the finish line.

Anders got to ride in Roland's Ruf, but it blow a turbo seal on the way
back, so didn't finish. They had a respectable 151.081 mph average
on the 1st leg.

I'll post photos and more info later.

Great job George! Can't imagine what it's like to drive at an average speed of 160! That's wicked fast!

Congrads, George. It sounds like you are getting that kinda event pretty wired-out. Your SC car is now running right, I take it. Roland's Ruf: Fell victim to 'the 911 TT disease'..Breakdown...It seems like those cars, while they are wicked fast are not very dependable as a whole..Roland seems to have "notched-back" quite a bit on his speeds..he musta got his "200mph club jacket" and decided not to keep risking a big crash like is possible at Unlimited speeds.
Good job, you 928ers. These events are tailor-made for the 928, and great group of competators is always there at the Pony Express at Battle Mountain, Nv.

George:

Thanks for the report. Glad you didn't run out of gas! Too bad about Roland. Hope Anders wasn't too disappointed. Averaging 151 in the leg that is mostly the Gap is pretty fast. Congrats for all the podium spots.

Hey, Marc...we're all waiting for your return. If you could bring the White Car back (I know, probably not; probably the GTS) and Dave Lomas comes back, we could have The Great White 928 Team with Tim & Cheryl to make it 5. Of course, we'd let Rich Sanders and Paul Mooradian on the team with their non-white cars because we want to win too!

I can almost-fondly remember driving back to SoCal after a weekend of driving scholl at what-was-then Sears Point Raceway. Cruising south at what seemed like a comfortable speed, we blew by a black-and-white Camaro that seemed like he was standing still. I ratcheted the throttle up a little to make sure he wouldn't catch us, out of sight, then park way in the back of a shady-looking place and had dinner for a long while. Whew! It was great while I was immortal, but those days are gone now.

Drove home from Willow with the DSR car on the trailer. My hired driver was at the wheel of my Mustang, came up hard behind the truck-and-trailer, slammed on the brakes next to us and leaned out the window to ask why we were going so %$&!ing slow!.. I pointed back to the pair of CHP's sitting less than 10' behind him. His reaction was priceless, a big swerve that almost got us, then a sheepish crawl into the lane behind me for the parade home. No ticket, amazing.

Driving home from high-speed events is always dangerous, since the speed you are used to makes "normal" highway speeds seem like a crawl. Bump it up to half of race-normal, and you are getting into go-to-jail speeds. Better to go camp out at a motel overnight to get the speed sensations out of your system. Or have somebody else do the driving while you wind down.

The drive home from ORR events really sucks....as Dr Bob pointed out it can seem soooooo slow, when in reality you are still exceeding the speed limit. Not uncommon to travel from Battle Mountain to Reno and be passed by no-one, only to realize later just how fast your were going. I'm sure Anders was driving at a leisurely SWEDISH pace, which would land him in jail over here......but then we might get a better story than a brothel report!

I was driving over the speed limit and was aware of it, thing is that driving safely for me is to not crawl next to someone while passing but instead getting past and then go back to a comfortable safe (slow) speed.

The event itself was great, I will try and get my own car to an open road race next year.

Congratulations to all 928ers!!!!

Anders
Don't worry about the tickets...until you get a CA drivers license they don't really hurt you...just make sure you pay them...otherwise they will issue a warrant for your arrest!!! At least you don't have to worry about your insurance going up like the rest of us!

Hey Anders:

Welcome to the US. Now do you wonder why I was putting along at the speed limit to and from the Gamblers Run?

Good job LADIES and gentlemen. The 928 crew all within 1 mph. Can't wait to hear the details.

Anders - cruise control is your friend.

Yes, I am amazed of the amount of energy put into catching speeders when the most basic things are uncared for. But that discussion belongs somewhere else..

Dennis, I used the cruis control and have driven almost 500 miles since Battle Mountain and still not hit the reserve!
