Just last spring, I got a flat, changed to the spare in a Walmart parking lot. Drove home, and put on an extra tire/wheel. Lickety split. Sure, I took an extra long lunch, but all of this was FREE. AAA would take you to a tire store, am I right?

I have used the spare only 1x in 10 years.
They will take you pretty much wherever you want to go.

I'll keep mine, thank you, but they are a bitch to deflate
Simply loosen the valve and let it deflate as far as it will go naturally... You can then deflate it the rest of the way with a mityvac. When finished, just be quick about tightening the valve back up.

Once the tow truck is on scene sure, i'm sure he'd drop you off wherever you wanted, including a tire store.

PS....even if your collapsible spare doesnt hold air, they work pretty good in collapsed mode too as long as you keep it under 25mph.
(Ask me how i know).

I used mine from Anaheim to Laguna Niguel on the 89S-4 back in 2002. I was on my wat to visit
the Los Angeles 928 International of Anahiem team but suffured a blow out. It worked well.
I still have mine in the GTS because of my experience with the spare.

Sounds more like a pit crew vehicle.

I wouldn't bother with the spare personally.
A friend had a delaminated tyre at Le Mans. His spare had deteroriated and wouldn't inflate, so we all offered our spares to help. 3 of the 4 tyres wouldn't inflate. 75% failure rating. The sub woofer and a can of tyre weld seems a much more sensible idea.

Still have mine in place ( 87 S4 ), but the factory pump never came with the car. Had to use it in '03, at SITM. Drove from the hotel to breakfast, came out to a flat. Got the Maijer bought inflator out, and was inflating away, when someone with an airtank happened by! Poof, the tire was filled, I drove down the mountain to a service station, who plugged and filled the tire. Drove on that for about another year....
Yes, the spare is difficult to collapse. I'll remember the mityvac tip for sure!
The spare drove well, felt good too. No, I won't use it for daily driving. No spare factory wheels either.

I carry my spare, but fortunately have yet to use it. I've removed it several times and I'll be happy to compare notes with Bigs on a few new words I've invented on each attempt at putting it back in. My PO made two "compartments"; one for the subwoofer and one for amp that, when covered, raise the rear cargo area slightly (3") to hold these two items and allow the spare to remain in place; the air compressor just rides on the floor behind my seat. E-mail me if you're interested and I'll send some pics (may be a day or two). Having a spare still doesn't keep me from having my cell phone along for the ride. I can't speak personally on Fix-a-flat, but I haven't heard good things when it comes to repairing a flat previously fixed with Fix-a-flat. Good Luck!

I carry my spare and a Chinese copy 'Porsche' airpump from 928 Intl. It looks like junk but it works very well. I use it a lot for various things but I've never had to fit the spare though I do test-inflate it occasionally. In its case the pump fits perfectly inside the spare wheel. The jack goes behind the tooltray. I was astounded to discover that due to the rear wheel spacers the spare cannot be used on the rear axle. You either have to remove the spacer (not easy at the roadside) or fit the spare to the front end and use the front wheel at the rear!! I suspect this is another of Herr Dr Ing Porsche's little jokes.

ive ditched mine for the weight loss and carry a can of tyre weld instead, along with AA membership.
